bloodyminded
Man, I don't know what's in the French water, but these guys are becoming true masters of an arguably diminished and diluted genre. First there was Martyrs, a sort of nihilistic last word on the so-called "torture-porn" genre of...well, torture-horror movies, like Hostel and the Saw franchise. But while those movies were very conventional, mosty UNscary horror films, Martyrs is a colder look at the brutality of torture..and rather than having fun with it, providing cheap thrills, the French film is actually difficult to watch. Inside is a more typical, cat-and-mouse, avoid the killer sort of film. But it's still vastly superior to what we're used to in this genre. That's because we have expert film-makers: it feels like a mainstream, accomplished film...but it's also full of terrible violence. It has realistic, complex characters, rather than zany, sexed teenagers heading (as the audience knows from the start) to their certain doom. In this movie, a grieving and deranged woman wants another woman's baby...before it's even born. Much mayhem and murder ensues. Extremely, brutally violent. Not for everyone. Trust me.
