bloodyminded Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) I liked this movie, but I honestly don't even know if I'd recommend it. Definitely not for everyone. Maybe the scariest movie I've ever seen, and definitely the most brutal. Still, the point of a horror film is to horrify; and this thing is certainly horrific. My long-time complaint, that horror movies aren't horrifying enough, has come to an end...now that I've been punched repeatedly in the gut. The first half is a sort of violent revenge flick, coupled with the frightening effects of profound psychological trauma. But the second half is where it becomes difficult to watch. A cult, determined to access the secrets to life after death, tortures people until they have a "vision" of the afterlife. Then, ideally, the conscripted "martyrs" will educate the cult members about what they've seen. And it's bloody relentless. I have watched a lot of horror movies, and have never seen one this disturbing. However, this is not a stylized bloodfest made to appeal to sixteen-year-old boys. This isn't "Saw," the franchise of singularly UNscary movies that are packed with brutality you never quite believe. It's high-quality filmmaking, with excellent actors and a kind of violence that is not at all enjoyable to watch. One might ask, "then why watch it?" Not a terrible question (see my first sentence), but the answer is clear enough: it's a horror movie that genuinely tries to horrify.
