Synchro Coach Posted April 10, 2004 Report Posted April 10, 2004 Finally something has come from endless lobby pressure on the federal government. There is approval for a National Sex Offender Registry. It remains to be seen how effective (or uneffective) this registry will be, and I think its effectiveness will be tied to how sizeable a majority the Liberal party has in the next election, but it is about time that the government addressed the need for a system tracking sex offenders. It is sad it came after a gun registry, which has done nothing but suck money from valuable areas, and is only in existence to stop the 200 annual homicides by a gun. (Taken from Government Report 1994 on Gun Related violence) 77.5 women in every 100,000 are assaulted every year...the math speaks for itself. Quote
Moderate Centrist Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Having seen the monumental waste of money and effort on the gun registry why should we now accept a Sex Offender Registry or believe it will be of any value. How will the registry stop the following: "77.5 women in every 100,000 are assaulted every year...the math speaks for itself. " Where is the source for this number? Also, the majority of women are assaulted by people they know and many choose not to report it. Again, how is a new registry going to solve any of these problems? Quote
playfullfellow Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 It will all boil down to how law enforcement and people are allowed to use the registry. l assume that the general public will not have access to this datbase or the human rights lawyers will have a hay day with it. A registry like this is not useful anyways with the meager punishment that is handed out in this country. Offenders already have to register with their probation officers for a set amount of time and this has done squat to alleviate the problem. A lot of offenders get lost in the system and disapppear. We would be better off with the money being spent on better and more enforcement in the way of more officers to handle the case loads. Quote
