jdobbin Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29147679/ Two big communications satellites collided in the first-ever crash of two intact spacecraft in orbit, shooting out a pair of massive debris clouds and posing a slight risk to the international space station.NASA said it will take weeks to determine the full magnitude of the crash, which occurred nearly 500 miles (800 kilometers) over Siberia on Tuesday. Oops. They say the danger to the space station is minimal but that is a heck of a lot of pieces of debris that can do damage. Quote
kimmy Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29147679/Oops. Statistically, this has to be pretty amazing. Like on the order of getting hit by lightning on the same day you won the lottery. The smashup occured over Siberia when a derelict Russian military communications satellite Space junk... crossed paths with a U.S. Iridium satellite. ...meets space-junk. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Despite astronomical odds (pardon the pun!) two satellites collide, like two bullets in a duel hitting head to head and fusing together. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe someone just tested a satellite-killing satellite!
