"Since we began tracking charitable donations in 1996, Manitoba has consistently been a leader among Canadian provinces both in the percentage of tax filers who donate to charity and in the percentage of total income donated," said Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute director of fiscal studies.

Ontario is the second most generous province with 26.7 per cent of tax filers claiming a charitable donation amounting to 0.92 per cent of total income earned in that province. Saskatchewan is the third most generous province, with 26.0 per cent of tax filers giving to registered charities amounting to 0.91 per cent of total income earned.

Canada ranks fairly low compared to the U.S. for charitable giving. It would be interesting to see more of a breakdown in donations because church donations are sure to rank high in some areas, not so high in others.
