jdobbin Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories After seven years of planning and several million dollars of public investment, the federal government has scrapped a project to build a national portrait gallery, Heritage Minister James Moore said late Friday. The abrupt abandonment of the plan to build the gallery is the result of unstable economic times, said the minister. "In this time of global economic instability, it is important that the federal government continue to manage its own affairs prudently and pragmatically," he said in a press release. After years of Liberal and now Tory waste, it is about time. Now let's see if they sell the paintings to the highest bidders to stop the chance of deficit. Quote

Many see it as very important to our national identity. Quote

Most of the portraits are of people few have ever heard of or ever want to. Canadians do need to know more about their history, but a portrait gallery isn't going to help. Really, personally I think its a big fat waste of money. Use some of the money to expand the McMicheal gallery in Klienberg instead, I'm sure that more people would want to view the works of the group of seven rather than portraits of obscure Canadians who may or may not have had lasting significance on Canada.
