Fain Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 However, since the Lakes are still somewhat polluted with heavy metals and other toxic elements from almost two centuries of unrestricted heavy industrial use, there is a question about how much safe potable water could be extracted from them. Water treatment can take care of pollution enough to be deemed good enough by Canadian and American Regulators. We can make alot of money for sure... Maybe we should. Lol is it our choice? you can say as Canadians we have a right to our water but water is water. A massively boring topic in that it'll likely never be an election issue thus the decison will be made by others. But i hope those who make the decisons see that Canada gets a decent cut. At least in tax revenue. Quote
Riverwind Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 There will be no vast redirection of water supplies from Canada to irragate Las VegasThe issue with water exports are always large scale diversions or the use of fossil water resources such as the great lakes (most of the water in the great lakes is left over from the the last ice age and would never be replaced if it was removed). Large scale diversions are a problem because they can seriously affect the regions downstream from where the water was diverted if the water flow changes (e.g. due to climate change).Without NAFTA it might theoretically possible write water export contracts that would protect Canadians in case of shortage, however, NAFTA takes that power away from the Canadian government so the only practical option is to ban bulk water sales entirely.
