capricorn Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 A poem for my American friends. More Than A Day As Thanksgiving Day rolls around, It brings up some facts, quite profound. We may think that we're poor, Feel like bums, insecure, But in truth, our riches astound. We have friends and family we love; We have guidance from heaven above. We have so much more Than they sell in a store, We're wealthy, when push comes to shove. So add up your blessings, I say; Make Thanksgiving last more than a day. Enjoy what you've got; Realize it's a lot, And you'll make all your cares go away. By Karl Fuchs Enjoy! Capricorn Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." jawapunk Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 (edited) I love getting these two days off. I work HR for an American medical instruments manufacturer and get their holidays off. I especially like gettting the extended long weekend. Happy Thanksgiving. Edited November 23, 2007 by jawapunk Quote Leg room, there is none.
Guest American Woman Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Thanks everyone! I'm spending my Thanksgiving vacation in Canada. Haven't exchanged any of my American dollars yet, but I guess I'll find out today what it's worth. Quote

(didja know it started in this country?) Thanksgiving started in Canada?? No, I didn't know that. As for the exchange-- I think I got jipped. The guy at the bank did kid about it, though. When I said I'd like to exchange my American money he asked if I'd like Canadian for it. I said yes, and he said "uh oh." I told him I was prepared for the worst. Thanks again for the well wishes. Got them from most in customs too, which I thought was nice. So far it's been a real nice holiday. Missed the after-Thanksgiving sales in the States, though. Probably just as well. Quote
Fortunata Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 I believe Thanksgiving was a European thing. Canada celebrated the first Thanksgiving in North America. But I don't think that there is a place where Thanksgiving plays a more prominent part of culture than in the USA. Or is it because of the shopping and football, this I do not know. When you think about it though, what major holiday, is more inclusive (other than independence day) than the secular Thanksgiving, where doesn't matter if you are Christian, Morman, Jewish, Muslim, Bhuddist or a complete non-believer, it is a day for you and family and friends. Anyhow, it was in Newfoundland in 1578 , the Frobisher Expidition held a thanksgiving festival, sans football and black friday of course "Charles, new hat buckles are a pence a piece...lets lineup and be first in the morning" , and the pilgrims Tgiving was supposedly held in 1621. I am bummed I missed the good sales.Normally all my cottager friends go to NY this weekend, but our host has her first born coming home from Uni and he asked her not to have us. Ungrateful lil snot. He will get his ...... Going down Dec 15th. May I ask, how was the border in and out? And perhaps which crossing did you use? Quote

You're right. Thanksgiving was a European thing. Seems there's some question whether or not Canada had the first Thanksgiving in North America, though. (That's in response to guyser's post, actually). Who can claim the first Thanksgiving? Taking seriously the nature of the holiday as a harvest feast disqualifies the Canadian "Frobisher Thanksgiving" of 1578. Figures there'd be someone out there trying to credit the U.S. with having the first North American Thanksgiving, eh? Good point about how prominent a part Thanksgiving plays in our culture, though. I don't know if it's because of football/the sales either, or if they became a part of it because the holiday was so prominent. Sort of like the chicken and the egg question, I guess. It's just always been that way as far back as I can remember. And yeah, it is more than any other holiday just a day for family and friends, so that's kind of nice to think about. I don't blame you for being bummed about missing the sales. There are some really good ones out there, for sure. I wonder sometimes how they can sell stuff for so little. But yeah, that ungrateful little snot will get his. With your dollar still being worth a bit more than ours, and our prices being generally lower to begin with (not to mention lower taxes), I'm sure you would have had a good time shopping! I'm sure you'll have a good time on the 15th too, but you won't be hitting the best sales of the year. Wonder how the exchange will be then? I have the feeling it'll be going up and down for awhile. Right now it's basically at par, but I got 96.5 for my dollar here. I flew though, so I'm no help in giving you a heads up on the border crossing. Sorry about that. Quote
M.Dancer Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 We had turkey last night, and we will have it again today.
