As a former welfare worker in Alberta I must concur with maplesyrup. The source may be suspect to some but the information is not suspect to me. The welfare rates in Alberta are criminal. Paying low welfare rates makes some bean counters somewhere think they are encouraging people to work. However, keeping people poor increases costs to the health care system, the mental health system, the justice system and others. And the minimum wage is part of this formula too.
