Read the question, vote and discuss. I have always been disillusioned when I look into facts and opinions pertaining to the identity of Canada. Do you believe that we need to take significant measures concerning our Canadian identity? Do you think that a mandatory renunciation of foreign titles would help this cause? If no, what do you think we should do

I respect him for avoiding a civil war or anything massively violent however. As we seen in history, Sir Wilfrid Laurier did a mighty fine job with keeping the country intact; keeping the Anglophones happy, keeping the Francophones happy and establishing trade with the U.S. at the same time. PET's choice of action was respectable, he just did a bad job at it

Yes, he did make an impact but an impact alone does not warrant my respect. Hitler made an impact and the guy is a nutcase *EDIT: perhaps he does earn my respect in some cases, but less than often

Yeah, except Obama made such a great point in his remarks speech, (paraphrasing): "We are not just a bunch of different groups making decisions for ourselves. We will always be the United States of America" All Trudeau did was screw our national unity up the ass

Hahaha yeah.. However, I would not say that the hyphenated Canadian stands in the way of equal social justice. Instead, it stands in the way of our national unity

I was watching CNN earlier this evening and I was amused with how many times they talked about this whole "African-American" thing.. Why should he be labeled as an "African American"? He is JUST AN AMERICAN like everybody else. Black or White, you are just an American. That is pure equality and I am sure that is how MLK would have wanted it. Also, it should be this way in Canada as well, as John Diefenbaker wanted it.. Oh how I wish we retained the same attitude 50 years later

Actually, we just tried to make the same point. When I said "better not to think about it", I meant we literally shouldn't think about it. If we are of Asian decent, you don't think about it, you are just a Canadian. When we label ourselves as "Asian-Canadians", we impose this self segregating attitude upon ourselves. This point was summarized in my second post

I actually have to agree with you there, I am a STRONG supporter of the connotation-less Canadian; as Diefenbaker wanted it.. And yeah, looking back at my post, I realized that I made an error.. Putting connotations to Canadians only puts them into the attitude that they are actually different, un-assimilated. That goes back to my point saying how we should not even think of our selves as "visible minorities" , lest we start growing that attitude.

It is not about superiority.. Dude, you if you want to move to Quebec you gotta learn the ways.. Why else would you want to live somewhere if you refuse to live the lifestyle? Anyhow, we could all learn a thing or two from the Quebecois people - unity

I would say that the Canadian term may be degrading because of our sense of identity.. It is "everything goes" , no need for assimilation. So this attitude is probably contrary to the point you are trying to make. There is intolerance on one side and the loss of identity on the other, we are probably on the latter side. By the way, this actually isn't aimed for visible minorities exclusively at all, but just all cultures in general.

So some guys on this board is able able to speak for Canada now eh? How about me? I had my hopes and faith in Obama.. I was rooting for him all the way.
