I don't feel the preservation of a skin colour should be a conscionable effort or concern because I don't see physical characteristics as having any significance in the quality of a persons character. Some of the people in this thread who are concerned about the demise of white skin are the same people making derogatory comments and generalizations towards other cultures. This ethnocentrism may not be outright racist but it certainly is not far off. If these people are worried of discrimination I think they should be addressing the ignorance from which discrimination stems rather than focusing on insulating themselves with greater numbers of people that share their physical characteristics. At a time when the collective ingenuity and co-operation of the human race is of the utmost importance, the myopic concerns of appearance can only serve to negate our progress.

I have a highly developed sense of values. I am with Argus and August in preserving those values is a much more important legacy than preserving any particular skin-tone. However, I'm not too big to admit that I am influenced by appearance. Come on Rue, you should understand the concern, being a Jew. Jews have existed as a distinct ethnocultural group for over 3000 years. Some would even consider Jews to be a race (or a collection of races). Where Jews have existed as minorities in the nations of other races or cultures, they have suffered discrimination to some extent throughout almost this entire historical period. Is it not a valid concern for Jews to want to remain as Jews, propagate their ethnicity and culture (or at least some aspects thereof) through the generations, and protect themselves from discrimination by maintaining a primarily Jewish homeland? If anything, the continued existence of Jews has shown that resistance definitely is NOT futile. If it is a valid concern for Jews, why would a similar concern not be valid for other ethnic, racial, or cultural groups that may feel that they also could be threatened, in the future? It should be a concern for the racists here, but caucasians are not an ethnocultural group. Hence, the rest of us are not worried.

Well, if we're talking of cultural integration I would point out philosophies such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism to name a few. Certainly new age spiritualism has deep roots in these. Yoga is from Hinduism. I think cybercoma has done a far better job than I could in articulating this aspect of culture. I will add that there are feminist struggles for equality in other cultures just as there were in western cultures at the turn of the century. Women here in north america still do not have equal rights nor would I view our pop-culture as being respectful towards them. Absolutely, these are examples of racism and hate. I don't think a society should be measured by the lowest denominator. I think media has the effect of portraying certain events as being more prevalent than they actually are. I know that by looking at my own multi cultural community there is no reason to believe that *cultural aspects* are to blame for the vast majority of violence. Their presence in the quest for the higher potential of humanity. Values are held at an individual level with culture being the collective. I believe in the intrinsic good of humanity. I believe that to expand on 'the outstanding tradition of freedoms and democracy and human decency' we must as individuals make the transition from values of money and material excess to life and spiritual fulfillment, from relationships of domination to relationships of partnership, from a belief in our limitations to a belief in our possibilities, and from fearing our differences to rejoicing in our diversity.

Yes there are courts in Canada practicing sharia law, but these courts do not deal with criminal law and work on a voluntary basis. There are Jewish courts and Native courts that operate under the same principle. So whats the big deal?

No I think Canadians love for multiculturalism goes far beyond superficial stuff. Its easy to vilify a culture by focusing on the dark (and often misunderstood) corners of it. To hold these examples you mention as representative of the culture as a whole is akin to holding white supremicists as representative of western culture. Again, a few horrible examples are used in an attempt to vilify a whole culture. The same cheap tactic could be used on western culture. And to expand on those further we must build bridges to other cultures without the demand that they conform to what is on our side (ofcousrse Im not speaking in terms of criminal law within our country). Yes some of these cultures have issues to deal with that our culture may have already addressed but that doesnt mean we should be self-righteous and exclusive. We need to build a cultural consciousness that recognizes the good in other cultures as much as we recognizes the good in our own. And we must scrutinize our own culture as much as we do others. If you were to step outside of the western media and examine the mechanisms of western foriegn policy, the picture would certianly not dipict a culture that values freedom, democracy and human decency.

So correct me if Im wrong: 'White culture' = White people that you identify with. If thats not the case, than I would expect your posts to contain a description of the values that you feel are in need of protection. In a thread titled 'What must we do to protect our White culture' you might want to specify what exactly that is and how or if it is exclusive to 'whites', otherwise you just come off sounding like a racist asshole.
