    I checked and there are no squatting rights at all in BC. Don't know about Alberta.

    Any land not privately owned is Crown Land and under the jurisdiction of the province. In BC, you can apply for a lease or a licence to live on Crown Land through the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources.
