Canuck E Stan Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Wappel retires Veteran Liberal MP Tom Wappel, whose outspoken form of social conservatism often collided with his party's policies, says he won't reoffer come next federal election.A member of Parliament since 1988, the Toronto-area lawyer, now 57, has been known for his vocal stands against abortion and gay rights — and for refusing to help a veteran in his riding whom he suspected of supporting a rival candidate in the previous election. This is one Liberal who definately was a square peg. Is his "retirement" an indication of Dion cleaning house? In any case Wappel has to have been the most conservative of Liberals in the party in the last 20 years. jdobbin Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 This is one Liberal who definately was a square peg. Is his "retirement" an indication of Dion cleaning house? In any case Wappel has to have been the most conservative of Liberals in the party in the last 20 years. He was just on the TV being interviewed. He had said to his family that he would not seek another election after running in the past one. Each MP that retires has his own reasons. When Blaikie said he wasn't going to run again people assumed friction with Layton. The real reason was a hard to turn down job offer at the University of Winnipeg. Quote
