gerryhatrick Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Senate committee accuses Harper government of sabotaging Afghanistan probeMURRAY BREWSTER OTTAWA (CP) - Members of the Senate's all-party security and defence committee accused Stephen Harper's Conservative government Thursday of attempting to smear the upper house and possibly obstruct their investigation into Canada's deepening involvement in Afghanistan. snip Liberal Senator Colin Kenny said someone in the government with an agenda and perhaps in the prime minister's office likely pointed out the trip to a journalist. He said the story that aired was full of inaccuracies, which have now cast a shadow over the committee as it tries to get to the bottom of questions over reconstruction spending in Kandahar. snip The accusation is false," said Sandra Buckler, Harper's director of communications. "The real issue here is about accountability for taxpayers' dollars. Because this trip has become public, the committee is now being held accountable for its outrageous and unwarranted spending." http://www.macleans.ca/topstories/news/sho...ntent=n1019105A It's pretty funny to see Sandra Buckler saying they're innocent in smearing the Senate committee, and then proceed to smear the Senate committee!!! The Harper Government is like a bad cartoon. TAKE NOTE, there is also Conservative Sentator slamming the Harperites for this. geoffrey Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I don't know about smear, it seems like there aren't many untruths. Being said, I have little problem with the Senate committees trip. Those accommodations aren't unreasonable for someone of their position, and the goals of the mission were good to begin with. This isn't an arctic tour by a useless pseudo-monarch, this was a fact finding mission... it would have provided very valuable information if allowed to procede. Figleaf Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 It's not much surprise to see the PMO importing Karl-Rove-style scorched-earth politics into Canada. Admiration for destructived ruthlessness runs deep in the neo-tory psyche, as does hatred and contempt for Canadian institutions. This operates hand-in-hand with a total lack of any sense of the boundaries of respect or fair play to produce these types of blunders. Consider just the recent record now before us: -unsupported accusation of breaching confidences levelled against Garth Turner; -Peter Mackay calls Belinda a dog; -Harper fallaciously calls Liberals anit-Israel; -and now this specious assault on senators trying to do their jobs. This is a pattern of behaviour that reveals the rue mean-spirited, self-serving nature of Harperite thinking that most Canadians will never support. Quote

I would hate and have contempt for any institution that makes democracy in Canada a joke. Why should Harper answer to a mostly Liberal and unelected Senate. -unsupported accusation of breaching confidences levelled against Garth Turner If you go against your own party thats what happens to you. Just ask Geogre Efford. Peter Mackay calls Belinda a dog Peter Mackay never called Belinda a dog what he actually said was "I think I'll go home and walk my dog at least dogs are loyal." and now this specious assault on senators trying to do their jobs. It wasn't Harper decision to stop senators from going afghanistan, it was the military's decision because of the security situation in Kandahar. This is a pattern of behaviour that reveals the rue mean-spirited, self-serving nature of Harperite thinking that most Canadians will never support. Yeah because in Canada we support rude mean-spirited, self-serving nature of Liberalite thinking. Quote

watching&waiting Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I would be all for making all the senator go over to Afghanistan and talk to the Nato commanders and let them ask all the questions they like. I also will let the address the Afghanistan government. Them I would put them all in the Canadian government transport and fly them deep into Taliban south and give them all an AK47 weapons and lots of ammo. Then they can ask the Taliban all the questions they like as well. After that we will be able to hold ellections for the senate positions, as few of these others would ever make it back here. But that is a dream I know will not happen, but..... Quote
