PUBLIC FORESEES GLOOMY 2006

The fact that half of those polled were bullish on the national economy, but cautious or even negative on their own personal finances may play a factor in how Ontarians vote in the June 23 federal election campaign.

“The fact that 46 per cent of Ontarians think they’re personal finances are going to be the same speaks to the fact that regardless of the statistics that are out there on the performance of the economy, it doesn’t feel like a booming economy that is doing really well,” Nanos said.

“I think it has implications for the federal Liberals because a key part of their platform and communications strategy has to do with how well Canada is doing economically,” he said.

“The federal Liberals and Paul Martin might be talking about how great the Canadian economy might be doing but for the average Ontarian, at least, it’s a wash.”

“What the polling shows is there’s a bit of a disconnect there between the economist view of the economy with the average person’s view of how things are doing,” Nanos said.

The poll showed younger Ontarians, at 37 per cent, were the most optimistic about their own pocket books in the coming year while those aged 40 and older were the most pessimistic about their New Year fortunes.

“When it comes to Ontarians who are over 40 years of age, they’re more likely to feel they’re worse off now than they were before,” Nanos said.

If Martin is hoping to convince voters to vote Liberal because of the great economic situation in Canada ,it looks like he'll have to do a lot of convincing in Ontario.

The public in Ontario doesn't feel it's that hot.

So any positive "we're the reason it's boomin'" campaign the LIberals are thinking about might just have to go negative in Onatrio just to win votes.

Looks like the Liberals are between a rock and a hard place.

"Any man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over 30 who is not a conservative has no brains."

— Winston Churchill

We Canadians are a funny lot. We've been bullish on the national economy for over 10 years now. So proud of the Liberals' claims of paying down the debt that we completely forgot the fact that our own wallets keep shrinking and shrinking and that we've turned into the poor cousins of our nearest neigbors.

When the Liberals got in, the debt was over half a trillion. Today it STILL IS over a half a trillion.

How much longer before we can start catching up to the Americans, you ask?

About 3 weeks is my guess.
