bc47man Posted December 31, 2005 Report Posted December 31, 2005 THE BEAUTY OF THE JOINT BANK ACCOUNT........................... A case in point............ A Veteran has been living for the last 7 years in an extended care home and has had the best of care. Now I believe that we as Canadians owe our Veterans a debt of gratitude and our respect, no question. This particular veteran is 84 and very much mentally challenged (dementia). He lives in a private room and has help 24 hours a day, the cost of which approximates $ 1900.00 per month. The point being that he is unaware of most that is current including his approximately $ 4700.00 per month pension income, which is directly deposited into his joint bank account where there is more than enough to pay twice his bills. The other holder of said account is his 57-year-old daughter who has total access to the remaining monies each month (approx. $ 2800.00) and that includes all of the last 7 years. So what is the problem, she's going to get his money anyway right? Or is she? Are there other heirs? Now here’s the clincher. Recently Veterans Affairs of Canada have seen fit to cut his monthly indebtedness to the home in which he lives to some $ 803.86 per month from $ 1900.00 and payable retroactively to the middle of May 2004. Wow!!! If my arithmetic is correct, that amounts to approximately $ 20,000.00 (that's twenty thousand Canadian taxpayer dollars) and I suppose directly deposited to his joint bank account. So why does this Veteran need this money, he has more than enough? Who else has access to this money? Why the daughter does of course (add $ 1100.00 to $ 2800.00 for a grand total of $ 3900.00 now available every month). So why does she deserve this win fall when there are disabled Canadian veterans who are fighting for enough to live on. In fact there are thousands of seniors in this country who can't afford to pay the rent, feed themselves or pay the heating bill? How about spending the money on submarines, which don’t kill our people, or helicopters that don't kill our people or troop transporters that don't roll over and kill our people, as recently happened in Afghanistan? Is this another one of those Liberal pay offs? Was this particular veteran a life long Liberal? Sure makes you wonder what is happening here doesn’t it? As a Canadian I am appalled at this blatant misuse and waste of taxpayers money. It seems an abuse of the system, but alas what can we do? Oh! Is there an election upcoming? Quote
