Cheney is pushing for several bases in the US to be closed. These bases are in both Democratic and Republican areas - a fact the Republicans point to as proof that it is a non-partisan decision.

My prediction:

In the lead up to the next election - perhaps as soon as the 2006 congressionals, the Republican area bases will be "saved" while the democratic ones close. Proving to the citizens that the Republicans are the only ones that care.
