What democracy? We now have a minority elite group of individual's writing law in this country, and none of them have ever been elected to their positions, they were appointed by self-serving politicians who want to see their agenda implemented without debate so they simply sit back and allow their appointed minions (Supreme Court Justices) make the calls and then the politicians just sit back and say, " We have no choice, the Court has ruled." That my friend is not democracy.

We have a situation right now in BC where the court has ruled that it is up to the Province to determine whether autistic children are entitled to treatment based on the astronomical costs of implementing treatment across Canada. I would suggest the same could be said for the language issue in Canada. When Canadian politicians declared Canada to be a bilingual country, the second language was only to be provided where numbers warranted it, but that has now progressed to a point whereby it's an entitlement, regardless of the costs associated, or whether numbers warrant it. No politician or bureaucrat has ever revealed what this initiative is costing the taxpayer's of Canada, and likely never will, because if they did, I'm sure the costs would dwarf any costs associated with treating autistic children.

In the case of my city for example, last year had to lay off police and fire personnel due to budgeting restrictions, but we are now in the process of tramslating all of our by-laws into French, All meetings must provide instant translation services, so the city was forced to hire a staff of translators, and all of our street and traffic signs are in the process of being replaced with bilingual signs, for what? According to the latest census only 1.69% of our population claims French as their mother-tongue. This was all brought about when an individual from another city came to our and deliberately got himself a parking ticket written only in English, he took it to court and we are reaping the financial consequences of ruling from unelected and unaccountable judges.

What do you think about Democracy in Canada?

Democracy only works well if the electorate is both knowledgeable and responsible. Unfortunately, we have two problems in Canada (and in the west).

1 Knowledge.

The pace of modern life and the biases and prejudices of the mass media combined with the spin doctoring of all government and political statements mean that the general population of voters lacks the knowledge neccesary to make an intelligent and rational choice on what vote is in their own best interests.

2 Responsibility.

Huge numbers of the electorate don't even bother to vote. Many others vote without bothering to put in the effort to find out who they are voting for. The majority don't even know the first thing about the candidate, but vote for the party instead. And their knowledge of the people who make up that party, their history, and their real policies, tends to be fairly shallow. Few attend political speeches and debates. Few bother to try and hold the candidates up to any high standard. There seems a fatalistic belief that all politicians are lying crooks - which means candidates known to be dishonest are not quashed as they should be.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my poll.

I personally wish the Canadian populace would wake-up to what is really going on in this country!

I think we should take the best from Communisim and Socialism, throw in a tiny bit of Democracy, mix it all up into something truly Canadian, and call it the Canadian Naturalist Party.

It's like the old adage " survival of the fittest".

Humans have mistakenly implemented this philosophy on an individual basis. It really refers to the survival of the fittest spiecies, not the fittest individual animal. After all people, we are just animals. I'm not even sure I would class us as the most intelligent either!

Here is a site you may like to take a look at. It offers a good alternative to todays erroding society
