Sad.Grim.Pathetic.

If you having nothing to contribute to my post but sarcastic remarks to someone else's intelligent response, please stay off. Who's smurfing?

I came on this board because I'm frusturated with British Columbia bearing the brunt of this country's immigration policy, it may not be a serious issue to you, but it is for alot of working people, so if your not from B.C. would you please politely bud out.

thank you.

Studies of immigration and aging show that we need far fewer immigrants to balance our aging population. Further, a large percentage of the immigrants we get are unsuccessful, which means that instead of helping to support social services they are consuming them.

Please provide a link. I see the aging population in my work effecting all professions. Teachers, engineer, doctors are all leaving the work force at an incredible rate in the next 5 years. Starting in 2006 we will have 3 people retire for every 1 entering the work place. These are real stats.

This is not a racist issue any more than Quebec wanting to hold onto its culture is a racist issue.

It is a racist issue for Quebec to discriminate based on ethnic and cultural origin. Perazo made a spectacle of himself making that clear after the last referendum.

Human resources are a valuable part of our economy and social fabric. It is a challenge to integrate with new cultures but we don't have a choice so you might as well embrace it. What are these values you are so worried about anyway? And how says that immigrants don't hold the same values?

It not always their values that differ but their traditions and former laws that differ from Canada. Some cultures believe in stoning to death any caught for adultery which of course we do not need to condone here in Canada. A lot of the problem is basically culture shock. If you are raised in a society with one set of laws for say 20 years and then you move to Canada which has way different laws, then it will be extremely hard to convert right away. An immigrant may also hold onto traditional values because they are homesick. It is not very easy to leave everything behind that you know and go to another place where you may not even understand the language. I have no problem with immigration as long as that person can be an asset to the country, be it they are a doctor, engineer or dishwasher. I do however feel they should know either english or french within a certain time. The inability to make oneself understood leads a lot of small minded people to think "bloody stupid immigrant, why dont they go back".

Playfullfellow,

Who are these people you talk of?

I have a friend who has a visa right now and is having a very hard time becoming a landed immigrant.

He is from Chicago and has a masters degree, will he want to stone you to death. I think not.

We have a points system and French and English give you extra points, as does providing a profession where we have shortages.

Slow down willy, I am not against immigration at all. The stoning remark was just an example of some of the very large differences between Canada and other cultures, I did not say it would happen here. When a person comes to this country, it is bloody scary at first. How would you feel if you suddenly packed your stuff and moved to Mongolia? Some people adjust quicker than others. And frankly, I do beleive that immigration should be hard, this will weed out a lot of people are not as serious about coming into Canada. I also know lots of people who want to immigrate to Canada and are having a hard time but their opinion is that it will be worth it once they succeed. The points system is fine and at least gives some guideline.

As for the assumption by some people that immigrants take away jobs is very short sighted, the reason why immigrants get the jobs is because they are willing to work for "x" number of dollars less than someone else.

As for immigrants stacking votes to put "their" people in place generally happens of course but you know, our system allows that so why bitch about it, get out there and vote yourself, let's work with immigrants to get to a common goal. If they snub their noses at you, then you can say you were the larger person.

Well, technically, no, those are simply your opinions unless YOU provide a link.

It is not racist to be proud of one's culture and to not want it to be dissolved in a sea of others.

Quite true. This is why big business loves immigration. It provides masses of cheap workers.

However, while saying "Immigrants take jobs from Canadians" might be wrong, it isn't wrong to say "Large numbers of immigrants tends to drive down wages".

Opinions are based on something and in my case the stats I quoted were in a key note speech I heard at a human resources conference in Vancouver on Friday. The speaker was Todd Moffin, from the CBC and is a futurist. Take them for what they are worth.

I can not link you to HR compensation research because they tend to be proprietary and very expensive. I could search the net for a supporting article but for the purpose of this debate I am too lazy.

Almost nothing. I don't trust the CBC's bias, and the articles I have read by experts in immigration and demographics like Daniel Stoffman, have claimed otherwise, that we do not need anywhere near the numbers of immigrants we are taking in. The links I gave you supported that, and point out that masses of modern immigrants are doing very poorly, and consuming social services rather than paying for them.
