punked Posted August 31, 2009 Author Report Posted August 31, 2009 (edited) Where does it say that it is all the cash the Liberals have? It was in the last Federal filings. http://www.punditsguide.ca/2009/07/liberal...s-not-broke.php http://www.punditsguide.ca/finances_e.php It might be more but it costs a lot more to run the Liberal party then the NDP so I doubt it. Seriously from all I have seen this is their chunk, they will borrow to finance an election if there is one and they have a bigger donor list but I see this add by as spin to make up for the hit they are going to take for not going to an election when Harper tells them to sit down in the house. The Liberals have had money pour in this summer as has been shown in a few of the fundraising snippets we have seen in the news. I suspect if they are running ads, they feel that money isn't an issue. Everyone borrows for an election. Even the Tories didn't have it all in cash last time around. As far as it costing more to run Liberal headquarters over NDP, I haven't seen the budgets for each. Care to share? Quote

It is true the 1000 donations have poured in and the Liberals have spent them as fast as they can suck them up. Although their less then 200 dollar donations have dried up. The problem with that is they tap their large donor base too fast and have to wait until the next Calender year to get those donors again. Last quarter almost 80% of their donations where more then 200 dollars, while the NDP and Conservatives get more then 60% of donations from less then 200 dollar donations. This is what leads me to believe they will wait until after this Calender year get all those 1000 donations in one big lump sum and have some money to actually run a campaign with. Seriously if all the 1000 donors dropped their money at one time the Liberals could have 9 million cash on had and be able to barrow 10 million and they can match every Conservative dollar. I have heard it costs the Liberals 8-15 million to run their organization mostly because they still run it like it is 1900. Although I hear Iggy has taken issue with this. The NDP run between 1-2 million most their organization are volunteer though but they have increased staff by twice the amount so I bet the cost is 3-4 million for this year but it could be anyones guess I suppose right? The big event fundraisers were in the last quarter according to the media. There are still a few of those in this next quarter. Small money donations often happen in greater number during elections as they do for many of the parties. Money continues to come in. To think that the Liberals are going to blow their entire budget if they do run ad ad campaign is a little unrealistic. Party finances have probably not been this good since 2005. You still need to pay to run the organization, and you can have all top donors donate again in 4 months. Like I said you have around 2 million I figure cash on hand I agree it would dumb to spend it all but I can't see you guys having much more then that. You also have to remember you have 7 leadership Candidates who have until the end of this year to pay off their debts as well. Dion has a 600,000 dollar debt and Iggy himself a 200,000 dollar one. I just don't see you going for it with your money problems. You just as self destructive as the NDP who would sell their building to stand their ground if they had too. You took in more money in 2006 then in 2005. Quote

My understanding is that Ignatieff is debt free. I have no idea about Dion. Where do you get the information? You took in more money in 2006 then in 2005. Larger election year donations. I am referring to times in between elections. Quote

Reports filed with Elections Canada on the June 3, 2008 deadline showed outstanding debt amounts as follows (source: Hill Times), and candidates were given various deadlines by the Chief Electoral Officer to repay them (source: Glen McGregor of the Ottawa Citizen, David Akin's blog): * $143,500 - Michael IGNATIEFF - June 30, 2009 * $627,860 - Stéphane DION - December 31, 2009 * $322,361 - Gerard KENNEDY - December 31, 2009 * $269,378 - Maurizio BEVILACQUA - December 31, 2009 * $184,460 - Martha HALL FINDLEY - December 31, 2009 * $160,290 - Joe VOLPE - December 31, 2009 * $150,095 - Scott BRISON - December 31, 2009 * $104,000 - Hedy FRY - December 31, 2009 * $395,890 - Ken DRYDEN - June 30, 2010 * $0 - Carolyn BENNETT * $0 - Bob RAE You must be right Ignatieff's deadline passed still some steep numbers there.
