jdobbin Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27418037/ Republican presidential candidate John McCain called Tuesday for Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens to step down in the aftermath of his felony convictions in a federal corruption case, saying the longtime Republican "has broken his trust with the people."A jury on Monday found Stevens, 84, guilty on seven counts of trying to hide more than $250,000 in free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. Could this be another Republican senator to go down to a Democrat? I can't believe Stevens wasn't challenged long before by his own party to avoid this possibility. Quote

Sen. Stevens is very popular in Alaska though, so how knows. He will still get a lot of the vote. Even if he does win though (because he cans till be a Senator in Jail), the Senate will vote to kick him out getting rid of another Republican. I noticed Sarah Palin didn't call on him to step down. Perhaps to avoid a backlash against her from her state? Quote

Stevens pledges to fight on. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/28/ste...dict/index.html "I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights," Stevens, the longest serving Republican in the Senate, said in a statement Monday. " I remain a candidate for the United States Senate." Will Palin vote for him or for the Deomcrat? Edited October 28, 2008 by jdobbin Quote
