jdobbin Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national...97-4686351a0794 Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government is failing to show the leadership that is needed when it comes to Canada's official languages, says the Official Languages Commissioner Graham Fraser.Speaking to reporters after his second annual report was tabled in Parliament, Fraser sharply criticized the government's "lacklustre" performance, saying the progress of official languages in Canada has hit "a ceiling." Among Fraser's criticisms was the Harper government's failure to date to renew the federal government's official language action plan which expired on March 31. While some temporary funding has been provided to help anglophones in Quebec and francophones in the rest of the country, the delay in renewing the program has fostered uncertainty among linguistic minorities. Harper had promised in the election to improve this area. It doesn't seem to be on the agenda now. Fraser is Harper's own nominee so he can't very well say that the Liberal bureaucracy is out to get him here. Quote

In the slimey way this government works it will find a way (as will their supporters) to either blame the Libs or the media or both. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 30 years of official bilingualism has ultimately been a failure. Only one inconsequential province, New Brunswick, has officially adopted it. Yeah, lets keep throwing billions at a program most speakers of either langauge don't give a s**t about. It's what we do....... Quote The government should do something.

Yes, we know what the right wing attitude to the Maritimes is. Inconsequential. Yeah, lets keep throwing billions at a program most speakers of either langauge don't give a s**t about. It's what we do....... Harper appointed the Commissioner. One assumes he supports the program. Quote
