maldon_road Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) Blair promised a referendum on an EU constitution. The Lisbon Treaty is a constitution by any other name. EU gains more powers* out of this treaty and and a referendum would be soundly defeated. Labour MPs are likely to feel heat from their constituents over having a national vote. If not a referendum, then an election. I think Gordon is in for a rough patch. * http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...0/20/weu220.xml No more EU changes, says Gordon BrownGordon Brown has launched a desperate attempt to halt the campaign for an EU referendum with a high-risk pledge to block any further extension of Europe’s power for at least a decade. The Prime Minister’s promise - which places him on a collision course with France as it pushes for an expansion of EU defence powers next year - amounted to a tacit admission that he had just been forced to surrender large amounts of UK sovereignty to Brussels. Mr Brown is under intense pressure to grant a referendum on the Reform Treaty, which he rubber-stamped in Lisbon on Thursday night. He insisted he had "defended all the British national interests" over foreign, justice, social security and employment policy in the treaty text. However, amid intense pressure for a referendum from the Conservatives and rebel Labour MPs, Mr Brown felt obliged at his first summit as prime minister to offer an olive branch to his critics. He said that while the Reform Treaty was good for Britain and Europe, he would personally block any further power-grabs by the EU.... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...0/20/weu120.xml Edited October 20, 2007 by maldon_road Quote If the men do not die well it will be a black matter for the king that led them to it.
ScottSA Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 The EU is clearly out of control. Even Belgium itself, the seat of EU "power" is in a political crisis which threatens to split Belgium in two. Yet the Eurocrats, after being soundly defeated in their last bid for a constitution, have managed to bluster another one together and are trying to ram it through without referenda. It may serve some limited purpose as an economic union, but no-one wants a political union. And unfortunately that's what the Eurocrats have their sights set on. Quote
