All attempts with the federal Dominion's Supreme Court to void those legislations have failed. -

That was 250 years ago. If you had followed the news, the Québécois have, in the last 50 years, taken back control of the conquered land; it was the Quiet Revolution. Law 101 was an inevitable consequence. Without violence, the Québécois have conquered back their control. Deal with it. -

One very possible hypothesis is that when Cartier heard the word, it was aboard his sail-ship. Under the force of the wind, the masts are creaking a lot, and he might very easily have misunderstood the exact pronounciation of the word because of the ambiant noise. -
As of 6;30 pm, the weather is just cloudy in Québec, chances of rain are now negligeable. From helicopter views, tens of thousands of people are already on site. Not a sign of protest anywhere. A major street close by is occupied by hundreds, if not thousands of people walking towards the site. No reason to believe it will not be a major success. Except, of course, for the garbage to be picked up later.

God bless the Queen. Dieu blesse la Reine. Whatever.... -
And of course, one should also consider the costs of gas to get there, paying for parking (if you can find a spot reasonably close). If I were to go there today, transportation alone would cost me around $100, for a free concert. I'll watch the show in a year or two when it is likely to be shown on regular TV, free of charge, save for the popcorn.

Alberta: Francophone scores key win in court
seabee replied to Leafless's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Tourists from France who come here are all amazed at the thought that the Brits spent so much money, blood and efforts to conquer this freezing colony, with all the problems associated with dealing with the conquered nation(s). Conquering a people is the easy part. Keepiing it conquered is a never-ending time- and money-consuming tasks which is frequently detrimental to its political stability. -
FYI. As of noon today, the wheather conditions are not as bleak as they were yesterday. The highest probability of rain according to one source, is only 40%, while another source gives only 30%. Both sources indicate that no more than one or two millimeters would fall, if any. Good enough for a political rally with 200,000 spectators plus live TV on cable for $20. Or for a heck of a good musical performance. Ever since he arrived in Québec, the city, hundreds of fan followed his every move, hoping to get a least a glimpse of McCartney, or if possible to get an autograph. That is almost as good as Harper or Dion.

This a debate for linguists. Or perhaps even the courts; after all, how often do we hear of teenagers "borrowing" a car for a joy-ride, but are found guilty of stealing. -

In 1759, only the city of Québec capitulated, not the entire colony. This occured only a year later, in Montréal. And the treaty of capitulation makes no mention of "Nouvelle-France", only of "Canada". -

May I suggest that you download the exact text of the 1763 Traité de Paris, and then do a word search for the words "Canada", "canadien", "Nouvelle-France", or any synonym or approximation thereof. What exactly was France ceding, in terms used by both parties. -
The people in Quebec are not bothered by the formal title. At worse, they recognize it is deserved. And the "controversy" in the city is non-existent; I know, I was there two days ago. The further away you get from Québec, the stronger the controversy. Odd. But the show may be a bit of a flop tomorrow, for a reason that has nothing to do with politics. All weather forecasters predict rain in the evening, with a near 100% probability.

I was in Québec city two days ago and believe me there is going to be a heck of a crowd. I confirm that across the river, in Lévis, they are setting up large TV screens and loudspeakers to show the live performance. The set-up can accomodate tens of thousands of people, perhaps 100,000. Right now, the entire Plains is closed to the public, and will open only end of afternoon tomorrow; one of the reason is to prevent overnight camping on the Plains. Nevertheless, there are already some people ready to sleep in their vehicles parked in a lot adjacent to the site. The authorities are expecting that immediately after the show, it will take up to four hours for everybody to leave the site. Ironically, Pauline Marois will not be there, not because of any political or ideological reasons, but because she is in the United States to take an immerson course in ... English. If you think this is confusing, the Plains of Abraham is federal territory, but the main building on it is the Musée National du Québec; the only other building on the Plain, just beside it, is the Old Jail, which is now an administrative building of the Musée. Anyone who claims to understand Québec is wrong.

Apparently, you are against democracy, the rule of law, constitutional documents, etc. Only violence. Sorry, but Québécois won't play by those rules. They just want to ruin your economy and milk you dry, led by John "Captain Canada" Charest [fiscal imbalance] Even you doors are violent. You let your doors do the dirty jobs for you now? -

Why? Not necessarily. We just all have a canadian citizenship, just an administrative document, nothing more. Nothing to do with nations. Ask the First Nations, designated as such in the canadian consitution. -

And anglo-Canadians should have british citizenship, as was the case until 1947, so they can pack and go back where they belong. -

The part "When minority cultures cannot accept the primary culture [...], then the country is in trouble." is accurate and applies to all countries. The best proof is that in Canada, the french colony part of Nouvelle-France, later renamed "Province of Quebec" had, in 1774, only 360 British families, while the primary culture was about 100,000 Canadiens. Yet this tiny minority of supremacist troublemakers never accepted the primary culture and spread like a cancer. And today, more than two centuries later, look at the sad state of the federal Dominion of Canada. -

If the English were responsible for the creation of Canada, then there would have been no need to conquer anything over here. -
Champlain & poutine, quelle horreur!
seabee replied to g_bambino's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Maybe for advertising tourism in Ottawa, use could be made of Michaële Jean acting as a waitress and offering the best meal obtainable in the federal capital, a hot dog. -
A new controversy has surfaced over the sites for McCartney's and Céline's shows: link: Cyberpresse One should also know that the Plains, officially the Commission des champs de batailles nationaux/national battlefield commission" is federal property; neither the city nor the province has any power over it.

And today the Bluenose sailship arrived in Québec, where it will be in the port for the next while, open to visitors free of charge. Quelle horreur! Should it have been re-chritaned the "Nez bleu"? It can be seen even from Lord Dufferin's Terrace. A British governor's terrace. Again, quelle horreur! And this terrace is adjacent to a hotel in which a British prime minister, Churchill, once stayed. It shoud be demolished, or so would Québec-bashers think that "xenophobic, racist" Québécois should do!
