  1. It's a foolish political career ending move and won't achieve much of anything.. The party was even supporting his bill in principle, but looking to increase the salary threshold. Now you have to wonder if it will be considered at all. He's cut off his nose to spite his face.

The point of the story isn't about an MP's career, but embarrassment for the government. Harper seems to be digging his own grave. The whole country is up in arms about a sense of entitlement in Ottawa, yet the Conservatives just dig their heels in even deeper to protect a couple of their own rotten apples. Or maybe there's more than just a couple. We'll never know if Harper gets his way.

Trudeau scored big yesterday when he announced that Liberal MPs and senators will post their expenses online. That's what voters want to see, not more hiding behind a cloak of elitism.

  2. However, we now have a 24hr newsday that demands news. And if it bleeds it leads has never been more apropos. Video media in particular salivates over bloody violence of any kind, the more outrageous the better. It lovingly details every disturbing, disgusting aspect of such crimes in an almost pornographic way.

So you have all those frightened people hiding behind their triple locked doors clutching their firearms waiting for some black crackhead to come smashing through attacking them. And so you have 5 year olds killing each other with those firearms.

As I've said before, I can accept firearms as a tool. But 80% of people who own firearms never hunt. These guns aren't tools. They're there waiting for the horrific black man to come busting through the door.

When I watch American news, I hardly ever see stories about deranged druggies killing people in home invasions. Any news involving guns is almost always about mass killings or school kids settling a score or domestic shootings or accidents involving kids. The only indication I get of the need for self-defense against criminals comes from the NRA, not the media.

And I would say that this is the reason that so many people are under the false impression that gun crime is on the rise in the first place. Gun crime is lower than it has been in decades, and yet people are more worried about it than ever before. What has created this disconnect between reality and perception? Sensationalism.

    -k

Mass murders are pretty sensational on their own, don't you think? It wasn't the blanket media coverage of Sandy Hook and Aurora and Arizona and Columbine that made me appalled at the killings. I was appalled the first moments I heard about them.

Blaming the media for outrage against guns or pretty much anything else is a tired old cop-out.

  3. If you as a leftist are, in theory, oppossed to discrimination, then why does discrimination against "whites" cause you to become sarcastic? Most of these "whites" that you complain about who are in power are of your ilk - so are you telling me that no matter how stridently leftists someone is, no matter if they sincerely believe that all forms of racism and discrimination are wrong, that everybody is euqal, it's still an issue that they're white? Really?

First, just because I oppose discrimination doesn't automatically make me a "leftist". Second, I was being sarcastic not because discrimination against whites is a problem, but because you think it is. I didn't think I'd have to point that out, but now you know. And third, I wasn't complaining about whites in positions of power, just pointing out that they're there, to rebut your point about discrimination against whites.

There are serial killers on the loose right as we speak. You may think that from watching CSI and Murdock Mysteries solving homicide cases is a piece of cake, but really it's not. It's easy for special interest groups to scream discrimination, and arm chair Jessica Fletchers like yourself to expect that all homicides should be solved and police 100% omnicient - but reality works differently. If you think there's a problem with unsolved crimes, then why don't you study criminology and become a private investigator or police officer yourself. Heck, why even bother doing that - start solving crimes now, right now and on your own. There are so many missing people out there, why can't you solves these cases yourself then?

Why should I have to do someone else's job for them? The police are hired to do a job and are paid to do it by taxpayers like you and me. If they're not doing their job, wouldn't you as a taxpayer want to know?

  4. The inquiry is agenda-driven and completely distorts the true nature of the problem of missing people in this country. People of all sorts are missing and except for immediate friends and families, nobody really cares. So then what does this inquiry accomplish?

British Columbians might want to know if the police allowed a serial killer to go on killing in their neighbourhood. Most people might not have cared about missing prostitutes, but I think they care about psycho killers in their midst and if the cops didn't do anything about it, that's a major dereliction of their duty.

I don't see how anything any of these candidates has said is particularly controversial - and it seems a little ironic that mainstream political parties would be dumping candidates for the slightest remarks about special interest groups, while they care not a smidge when one of their candidates goes haywire about men, esp. those that are white.

You said it, brother. Despite holding the overwhelming majority of positions of power in the country, white males are the new Natives. Come, let us sing in solidarity...

    "We shall overco-o-ome,

    We shall overco-o-me..."

  5. I mean any way you look at it, she's an improvement on Ralph Klein and Ed Stelmach.

I think that's called damning with faint praise. :D

I don't find her attractive, but I don't think that would sway my vote. I think Sarah Palin looks nice...until she opens her mouth. She wouldn't get my vote if she showed up at my door on her knees with beer and pizza and a hockey game.

I admire Redford for her character but I still wouldn't vote for her. I must be a strictly policy guy when it comes to voting.
