Has anyone read about the Harvey Milk High School exclusively for gay students?
I was totally offended when I first read about this school. I thought we decided segregation was a bad thing a long time ago...but now people are insisting this a good idea. I would love for all students, not just heterosexual ones, to feel safe and accepted in their learning environment. Apparently nearly 70% of gay teens nationally have experience harassment or violence, according to the Sexual Information and Education Council. That is terrible, but it doesn't mean under any circumstances that gay students should get their own school. It means that the other students aren't being taught to accept others for who or what they are, and that is the real problem. Besides, judging by their dislike for homosexual students, discriminating heterosexual students would actually enjoy being separated from those they despise that much? Somebody needs to teach these people that they are not going to agree with everyone they meet in life, thus they should get used to it now, before they get a gay boss and get fired for being insubordinate or something like that.
Does anyone that the school is a good idea? No one I've been talking to seems to think so, yet I'd like to hear some information from someone with the opposite point of view, just to be as informed as possible. Thanks!
(By the way, this is my first post, and I didn't know what to say, how did I do?)
