I have been reading the Byzantium books by Viscount (John Julius) Norwich, which is about, as the title implies, the Byzantine Empire. The book begins with the birth of Constantine, and the division of the Roman Empire (in 286) between several different co-emperors, by Diocletian, who had come to the conclusion that one emperor wasn't enough to govern such a large bit of real estate.
