Not surprisingly, Danny Williams and the Conservatives won a huge landslide in the Newfoundland and Labrador election tonight. It looks like the Conservatives took just under 70% of the popular vote, leaving only a four member opposition (3 Liberals and 1 NDPer) to face the government in the House of Assembly.

Any time a party wins 70% of the vote, it’s going to have a commanding majority no matter what the electoral system. It will be interesting to see whether this brings on any discussion of electoral reform on The Rock. In other provinces, lopsided legislatures have helped to kickstart discussion of electoral reform.
