Republic Article on Israeli Pathological Narcissism

Israel in the bubble world

Because of delusions and fantasies, Israel and the US both miss the real solutions to their existing problems

By Dan Adleman

Pathological narcissism occurs when an individual’s psychic horizons close in around him to form an insular, almost opaque bubbleworld. The mostly reflective surface of this glossy bubble provides a peculiarly obfuscated view of the outside world, which the narcissist looks to only to feed his all-pervasive pattern of self-inflating fantasies and behaviours. At the most extreme end of the narcissistic continuum, narcissists display what Freud referred to as “magical thinking,” a process whereby the narcissist is so convinced that the world revolves around his little bubble that he comes to believe that his petty thoughts and fantasies hold mystical sway over not only other people but also the very fabric of reality.

It could be argued that Israel, which acts with absolute arrogance and antipathy towards both its neighbours and the Palestinians, is the ultimate political bubbleworld. While outside of the US, most everyone in the world recognizes that the Middle East is an absurdly fragile equilibrium that’s constantly adjusting to Israel’s and America’s impositions, the Israeli government has long been content to run roughshod over anyone who opposes its will. Israel has worked in concert with its partner in crime, the US government, to transform the entire Middle East in order to make the Jewish state’s intrusion more palatable. But recent events have illustrated that there are limits to how much the bedevilled people outside the bubble are willing to collude with plush, gated communities that not only explicitly exclude them but also treat them with callous disregard. Just as the bubble-headed Bush administration has recently run headfirst into brick walls in Afghanistan and Iraq, Israeli narcissism has discovered an insurmountable obstacle in the form of Hezbollah...

It should be noted here that bubblehead Bush's adventure in Iraq was conceived and heavily pushed by neocons Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle, both of whom have strong ties to Israel's Likud party. So strong in fact that the idea of invading Iraq first saw the light of day in a paper written by Wolfowitz and Perle when the two were working as consultants to Benjamin Netenyahu back in the early 90s. And guess which country has so far been the only one to see any benefit from the invasion of Iraq?

Republic Article on Israeli Pathological Narcissism

The "Republic of East Vancouver" certainly has an agenda. The authour of the piece rewrote history, ignored facts and assigned motives to all with out regard to any evidence available.

For example, he says, "Israel’s attempt to mount an American-style whack-a-mole War on Terror on Hezbollah does not mesh with the reality on the ground." completely ignoring the fact that Hezbollah initiated the attack and stated its goal was to crush Hezbollah for good so that it didn't have the continued "whack a mole" attacks from Southern Lebanon.

The piece is a biased waste of time consisting of slogan shouting and repetition of the errors of others. The only value is that it reminds one to always check the facts offered in support of any argument.

I agree with your response to this article although I doubt I would have been as controlled as you in my response.

That said, if Israel is living in a bubble word, in what world does Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, Mulsim clerics who call on the destruction if Israel...live? For that matter in what world does the writer of this simplistic article

live.

This article is a classic example of self-righteousness or narcissism on the part of the writer. He is so convinced that his reality is the reality of the entire world, he writes what he does. The classic definition of a narcissist is someone who believes everyone and everything thinks the way he does.

This writer is a classic hippocrate.

I will once again state, I have contempt for anyone who writes about the Middle East and attempts to

depict it as a good guy versus a bad guy and good versus evil. There is no right or wrong on either side. There are a lot of humans however acting like idiots because they choose violence over reason.

I also have nothing but contempt for anyone who says that a country that is surrounded by terrorists and governments that call for its destruction is somehow narcissistic because it is preoccupied about surviving.

If I take this same idiotic writer and expose him to terrorist violence in his neighbourhood, he will be the first to write articles screaming for the police to take action.

First off, Israel occupied Lebanon for two decades, still occupies Sheba farms, and has been violating the Lebanese border for ages. Hezbollah kidnapped 2GI's and Israel, blithely armed to the teeth by the US, responded by completely obliterating Southern Lebanon. Not only was Hezbollah not crushed by the attack (which killed alot of innocent Lebanese people), it was actually strengthened as the Lebanese people and alot of the rest of the world (from Iran to Venezuela) got behind Hezbollah.

As for The Republic's "agenda", everyone has an agenda. The Republic's agenda is fighting against exploitation and hegemony, looking after the little guy, and exploring the kinds of opinions and ideas that most corporate media won't countenance.

Yeah and they did it for no good reason too......remember, it's the jooos fault for trying to stop rocket attacks....they should know better, if you are to be joooish, you have to allow tyour neighbours to attack you.......but this sheba farm thing, what does Syria have to do with it? ...for that matter, why does your complete misundestanding of the last 30 years of isreali history have to do with anything?

I would say, after reading two articles from this rag, The Republic, their agenda is to corner the market on talking toasters and the people who listen to them.

Ah, the stuff and nonsense one hears.

If Israel were truly preoccupied about surviving, it would not thwart the possibility of peace as persistently as it has and does.

Thwart peace? Yes. Like placing irrational conditions on counterparts' actions for example: demanding the PA control fringe factions. Like building illegal settlements on lands that it must return to the Palestinians. Like persistent acts of collective punishment, e.g. house demolitions. And let us not even mention the unreasonable final Oslo conditions which would have made Palestine a mock-state under Israeli hegemony.

People who truly fear for their survival would at least seek a just peace, don't you think?

Yeah who would expect a gov't to actually behave like a gov't and enforce instead of enable.....Given that when Fatah was in control, it was Fatah who sent the suicide bombers....how more unreasonqable could Israel be.......

And how unreasonable of Israel to thwart peace so...by making peace with her most dangerous neighbour.....

Your saying that the agenda is to shout slogans rather then attempt to understand the facts and base editorial opinion on those.

Pointless waste of time, init?

The PA was an elected government that never put a single attacker of Israel on trial or in jail. Even after Israel caught them and turned them over the the PA, no action was taken.

On the other hand, Israel even put General Sharon on trial to satisfy allegations about his behaviour in Lebanon.

The rule of law works in Israel but not in the PA controlled territories so Israel must mete out punishment directly.

Like building illegal settlements on lands that it must return to the Palestinians. Like persistent acts of collective punishment, e.g. house demolitions.

What is illegal about a group of people buying up land in PA territories and establishing a community there? We let people do that in Canada and other countries.

And let us not even mention the unreasonable final Oslo conditions which would have made Palestine a mock-state under Israeli hegemony.

The PA accepted the proposals and then Israel complied and the PA didn't. The unreasonableness came from the hawks in the PA territories who refuse to stop using violence against Israel.

People who truly fear for their survival would at least seek a just peace, don't you think?

Israel does seek peace. A just peace is in the eye of the beholder.

I would like to buy your car for $100. That would be a just price for me. Please forward the necessary paperwork. Fortunately for you I will not follow your reasoning and engage in violence to obtain your car for a just price.

If Israel were truly preoccupied about surviving, it would not thwart the possibility of peace as persistently as it has and does.

The one thing the Arabs have made clear is the Khartoum declaration:

  1. No peace;
  2. No negotiations;
  3. No recognition

Any variation from that (other than possibly Egypt's and Jordan's actual recognition of Israel) is a "houdna" or temporary truce which, while seeming beautiful and promising, is a bid for time after being walloped.

Thwart peace? Yes. Like placing irrational conditions on counterparts' actions for example: demanding the PA control fringe factions.

If the "Fenian raids" were to resume, would Canada demand the US do something about it? If the PA can't control its territory, it is not a nation, and undeserving of treatment as such.

Like building illegal settlements on lands that it must return to the Palestinians.

There is no such entity as the "Palestinians". The "Palestinians" were a creation of media to find a way to salami-slice yet more off Israel than was achieved by the creation of the Kingdom of Transjordan in the early 1920's and the hiving off of the "West Bank" and "Gaza" during 1948. Where were the demands, between 1948 and 1967, for the creation of a "Palestinian" state on the "West Bank", then "occupied" by Jordan or the "Gaza Strip", then "occupied" by Egypt? Or is it only Western-style democracies that "must return (all of their land) to the Palestinians".

Like persistent acts of collective punishment, e.g. house demolitions.

What other choice is there, for families that accept money for their children to become walking bombs?

And let us not even mention the unreasonable final Oslo conditions which would have made Palestine a mock-state under Israeli hegemony.

What would not be a "mock state"? A state overlaying all of Israel's existing boundaries? Or would you suffer them a landlocked village somewhere?

People who truly fear for their survival would at least seek a just peace, don't you think?

On the terms you're offering, I think not. Unless you're referring to the peace of the grave.

Egypt and Jordan and the extent of progress achieved in PA negotiations prove that despite rhetoric, peace is possible.

You put the cart before the horse. The PA is not a nation because it has been prevented from becoming one under Israeli hegemony.

Like building illegal settlements on lands that it must return to the Palestinians.

There is no such entity as the "Palestinians".

There's a good example of thwarting peace right there. Denying that an opponent exists, or has a self-conception equal to your own is a recipe for continuing conflict.

The "Palestinians" were a creation of media to find a way to salami-slice yet more off Israel than was achieved by the creation of the Kingdom of Transjordan in the early 1920's

"Palestine" as the name for the geographic region goes back to AD390 when the Romans called it that as a province of their empire. The modern term "Palestinians" is the name by which the Arab inhabitants of the territory of Cisjordan under the British Mandate are now called. The origins of these names does not matter. The existence of this distinct group of people is what gives rise to their right of self-determination.

Like persistent acts of collective punishment, e.g. house demolitions.

What other choice is there, for families that accept money for their children to become walking bombs?

I don't have to offer another choice. The choice being employed is a crime against humanity. You don't have to have another choice to make it wrong to commit a crime against humanity.

Anyway, other choices include making peace, stepping up security, ignoring the families.

And let us not even mention the unreasonable final Oslo conditions which would have made Palestine a mock-state under Israeli hegemony.

What would not be a "mock state"? A state overlaying all of Israel's existing boundaries? Or would you suffer them a landlocked village somewhere?

A state unsupervised by its former antagonist; with control of its own borders, forces, and trade; on the entirety of the territory it justly claims.

People who truly fear for their survival would at least seek a just peace, don't you think?

On the terms you're offering, I think not. Unless you're referring to the peace of the grave.

Until just now, you had no idea of the terms I'd suggest (I'm in no position to 'offer'). So without knowing them, you'd apparently dismiss them. Again, another approach that would serve to thwart peace.

I'm not going to go point by point through the post just above. While there are no personal attacks (thank you), the post does betray a knee-jerk reaction against anything advanced and Western. The fact is that the Jews are there, must be there, and will remain. It is the Palestinians' (whatever they might be) job to recognize that as a fact, and then for them to go to work at the bargaining table.

Israel cannot and will not bargain with any group or entity that does not accept its existence, and won't bargain face-to-face. Israel cannot and will not bargain with the threat of violence either. Neither of those pre-conditions are too much to ask.

Oh please.

OK, just on one point alone, Egypt recognized Israel by having Sadat address the Knesset, in Jerusalem, in November 1977. Withi the issue of Israel's very existence settled, negotiations could proceed.
