Guest Warwick Green
Last week, in the middle of the refugee mess in Lebanon, the CBC postponed the The National to show this tripe. The U.S. television network ABC said Friday that it has cancelled reality show The One, leaving questions about a planned Canadian spin-off scheduled to air on CBC....In Canada, The One had 236,000 viewers for its debut. In comparison, Canadian Idol and Rock Star: Supernova were each seen by more than one million Canadians. The ratings slipped even lower when the third and fourth episodes aired this week. TV critics panned the show for being too slick in some portions and under-produced in others. Its selection of music industry judges and contestants was also criticized. In Canada, the show sparked a debate about CBC's programming priorities when the public broadcaster announced plans to bump its flagship newscast, The National, in order to broadcast The One in the timeslot chosen by ABC. CBC-TV justified the simulcast as an attempt at new programming techniques, and as a means to launch a Canadian-made version of The One in its 2006-07 season.... http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2006...-cancelled.html

It doesn't place in the Top 25 shows, and gets around 500,000 viewers - half of what CTV's News.Maybe the CBC should just abandon the news business entirely and concentrate on better reality TV shows. jdobbin
Last week, in the middle of the refugee mess in Lebanon, the CBC postponed the The National to show this tripe. This was always the danger of simulcasting a U.S. network a program that could be cancelled by that U.S. network. CTV and Global routinely have this problem and often have to change their programming with no notice. They also have to change programming to correspond to U.S. holidays. It was an experiment they are not likely to repeat again. And once the Conservatives get their majority, they can sell the CBC to someone else and eliminate all Canadian content guidelines. Cameron
And once the Conservatives get their majority, they can sell the CBC to someone else and eliminate all Canadian content guidelines. Who ever said anything about selling the CBC? I know it sucks. I have the channels blocked on my TV because it sucks so much... The only people who watch it live in Toronto and he doesn't have any seats there. And selling it should help with the rural vote.

And getting rid of foreign ownership restrictions on television/radio, cable and satelliite as well as phone companies and dropping Canadian content regulations would get him the business vote. Canadians just want U.S. channels anyways.
Charles Anthony
- extracted from " He said, She said, They said -- Cheap relationship angst in the House" one of the multitude of threads dealing with the aftermath of the Peter MacKay and Belinda Stronach affair This incident will disappear from the headlines in a few days.I doubt it because people commonly enjoy watching others fight. It is also a continuation of a fight that should have disappeared a few days after the first round. Maybe it will get people more interested in politics since it brings our politicians down to an Earthly level to which apolitical people might relate. I think one of the networks should pick up on this and try to resurrect their "The One" experiment in some altered form. Certainly it is crass to say this but I have always found that the most exciting portion of a reality show episode is the ending or what I call The Burn. The 15 seconds of watching someone lose (either they get fired or dumped or voted off or sent packing) is worth the dramatic wait. I wonder if I am alone. I never watched "The One" so I can not have any idea of why that show failed so misearably. How did it compare to other successful reality shows in this regard? Were people dramatically burned? The reality televsion industry produces some of the most ingenious works of art and I admire them for their creative use of drama. We have certainly risen above the base-level excitement of watching O.J.Simpson escape down the express-way in his white Bronco to a higher level of cinematographic demand and supply.
