Canuck E Stan
Sixteen Muslim young men jailed for terrorist activities. Young impressionable youth who followed the path of an angry 43 year old adult who's anger has convinced these young men to follow his interpretation of "God's word". How were these young men manipulated to believe that their religion's message was to kill and destroy. Where was the imam's message of peace and love that the Islam religion supposedly preaches? What had happened to convince these young men that these terrorist events were necessary? Were their family life so dysfunctional and without love that the obsession to commit killing was justified? Why has the Western culture that brought their parents here not appealing to their needs. What was missing in their lives? Is their understanding of Islam naive and immature? Why do they believe that their God requires death and suicide? God and the young soul, misunderstood? August1991
What was missing in their lives? Is their understanding of Islam naive and immature? Why do they believe that their God requires death and suicide? These are all good questions Canuck. One could just as easily ask them of the 19 who flew those planes into buildings in September 2001 or of the person who drove the suicide truck into the US embassy in Beirut in April 1983. Biblio Bibuli
What was missing in their lives? It's rather obvious what is missing in their lives ... fun. The austerity of Islam may be fine for an old fart, but young men with their high energy level need something to do. They don't play sports, they don't go out with their buddies for a beer, they don't date girls. What else is left to expend their energies on but violence & hatred? Back in the desert a hundred years ago, by the time a guy was 18 he had a herd of camels, a wife & a few kids. He had plenty to keep him occupied, so following the tenets of Islam was not a problem & was a boon to their society making the young man a responsible citizen. But in today's society with it's longer period of youth ... this just doesn't work. PocketRocket
BB: That's an interesting take, and one I had honestly never thought of before. Sort of a variation on the old saw about idle hands being the devil's tools. But I am not sure if this would apply to those Muslim youth in Canada who were arrested. Presumably, being raised here, they would have more access to "fun", even if their religious tenets limit them as to which activities they can partake in. Hard to say. I think it's worse for them here. If everyone in your village in Pakistan stays home on a Saturday night until they're 18 then marries their cousin ... it seems quite normal. But if everyone in your class looks like they're having a good time that your community & family won't allow you to partake in ... it could turn you ugly. sharkman
I think the racism they experience also has a big part in what makes someone more susceptible to the rantings of extremism. Of course the Koran talks about martyrdom and killing infidels as well. Nothing is done with such fervor as that done with religious fervor. Charles Anthony
His twisted sense of what God wants is just as horrifying. You can't justify either one so what is your point? That is part of the point: neither can be justified. The other part of the point is that both are religious-based hatred that is DOMESTIC. Whatever "it" is that breeds Fred Phelps' hatred is domestic and may also be a contributing factor for these Brampton terrorists. Why not ask to halt the immigration of people who share the same demographic origin as Fred Phelps? Quote We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society. << Où sont mes amis ? Shady
Um, because people like Fred Phelps are really annoying, but don't pose much of a risk to our country. On the other hand, people who want to mass murder thousands, if possible millions of people are definitely a risk. It's quite logical. Wilber
Whenever Christian wing nut bigots start spewing their garbage it does get in the media and it is quite rightly condemned. I don't see why they always get brought up whenever Muslim wing nut bigots start spewing their garbage. It's like some people think that Muslim wing nut bigots should get some kind of free pass because they aren't the only wing nut bigots out there. I say greet tolerance with tolerance and intolerance with intolerance. As a citizen of one of the most tolerant countries in the world I won't tolerate intolerance whomever it comes from.
