How about a municipal sales tax?  Regardless, how did cities build these things before the advent of property taxes, which really is a ridiculous conceit.  Imagine being taxed for your property?  I can’t believe some of the things we let slide.

Imagine paying taxes on something to own it.  And then having to pay taxes on just owning it?  When you think about it it’s pretty crazy.

What if there are ongoing municipal expenses like sewer lines and snow clearing and road maintenance involved with your ownership? Is that crazy or just something you never considered?

How is that any different than making businesses pay very high property taxes? 🤣

it’s good to see that you accept the fact that high taxes can have negative effects though.  Lefties never used to admit that.  So apply high property taxes with the same logic.  Could it cause people to move out of cities then?

They always paid for those things with property taxes.

If you’re going to buy something, do you check how much the business pays in property tax to decide where to buy it?

Of course not.  But you certainly would factor in an additional tax being charged.

In Ontario, property tax^[10] was first introduced in 1849 with the Municipal Act (or Baldwin Act) as the act constituted a municipal structure with cities, towns, and villages along with the creation of property tax that municipalities must collect that would also support schools.
