South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared "emergency martial law" on Tuesday, accusing the country's opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing, vowing to "eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order." He declared the step as critical in defending the country's constitutional order. It wasn't immediately clear how the steps would affect the country's governance and democracy.

"I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people and to protect the free constitutional order," Yoon said.

It is the first time since 1980 that martial law has been declared in South Korea.

The surprise move sent shockwaves through the country, which had a series of authoritarian leaders early in its history but has been considered democratic since the 1980s. The Korean won was down sharply against the U.S. dollar.

The Biden administration is in contact with the South Korean government and is monitoring the situation closely, a White House spokesperson said on Tuesday.

What bullshit.

The South Koreans parliament opposition has declared that Yoon Suk Yeol "no longer runs the country,: and the people are starting to revolt.

I sure hope the Americans have the courage to rise up against Trump, if he ever tries something like this, but I doubt it.

Fortunately, in our country, we have the 2nd Amendment.

Why rely on Congress when you have guns. The Korean parliament including his own party leader stood up to Yoon and made him back down. No one is expecting that from the Trump party.

Trump doesn't need to declare martial law to fight Congress either... so, what is your point?

My point is, this Congress won't stand up to him no matter what he does. Your checks and balances won't mean dick. Hope this is all hypothetical but I guess we'll see.

Our checks and balances involve more than Congress and a President...

Very strange that so many countries in the World are rising up, and fighting for democracy. While the so-called "greatest defender of democracy" is watching the safeguards, to protect the democratic institutions that made America great for centuries, is eroding. Yet nobody is doing anything about it.

MAGA loons don't care about people, or society.

Like what, other than the SCOTUS that has already been compromised.

How is the SCOTUS compromised?

We are a Federal Republic of the United States based on a Constitution.

Trump doesn't just get to declare himself King, no matter how much you fearmongers seem to think he can.

Trump packed it in his last term.

Trump can do whatever your system lets him do and who is going to stop him.

What do you mean by he packed it and how does that mean Trump can do whatever he wants?

You offer nothing of substance, just absurd fear-mongering.

Our system doesn't allow for a President to declare martial law as happened in South Korea.

Amazing that South Koreans have bigger balls than Americans do, when it comes to protecting democracy.

Which is why we still have some 30,000 American troops there helping to protect them...

He was filling openings right up to a month before he left office, even though the Republicans refused to accept a Obama nomination a year before an election on the basis it being too close to an election.

I'll ask again. Who is going to stop him?

OK... none of this explains your assertion that the Supreme Court is just going to go along with Trump installing himself as some kind of dictator or more specifically some implementation of martial law like this.

Nor is it "packing" the court to appoint judges through the normal process. That is just fulfilling his duties with the powers he currently has.

Stop him from what?

He has no power to do what was done in South Korea.

According to the Republicans in 2014, appointing a justice a year before an election was not a normal process. If they actually believed that, they wouldn't have approved Trumps last two appointments. They did approve them because they wanted their people on the bench.

You are conflating an argument about Senators then saying it was an election year, so let the voters choose who will appoint the next justice vs what is Trump following the normal process to appoint a justice in response to your claims that something improper happened here or some kind of nefarious packing... in response to your assertion the court is corrupt.

Which, you have yet to offer any actual evidence or argument in support of.

This is your bad argument to support here.

I'm saying the those Senators were full of shit, they allowed Trump to appoint judges right up to his last day in power while telling Obama a year before an election the voters should decide. I'm not saying they are corrupt, just that they are more likely to see things Trump's way.

I'm asking who is going to stop him. You can't seem to answer.

Great, this thread is not about your thoughts on the politics around Senate confirmation of Justices.

More likely to see things Trumps way was not your claim. You said:

"Like what, other than the SCOTUS that has already been compromised."

How are they compromised in such a way as to not stop Trump from doing whatever he wants?

No discussion required, the Republican controlled senate under McConnell is blatantly two faced.

I didn't say they couldn't, I asked who will.
