I'm warming up to some of your ideas. This is a Canadian political forum being overrun by pro-MAGA loons. Like nearly every Western country outside America, Trump is pretty much despised by 3/4 of Canadians. I am doubtful that the forum members believe what they are even posting, and it's plausible that a few may even be agents of Russia. 

There was a Twitter account I subscribed to in Edmonton called "YEGWave." YEGWave has been critixized in the past for posting inflammatory material, meant to increase racial tensions, and their pro-MAGA political positions. There are similiar sites across Western Canada, for Calgary and Vancouver. One poster had pointed out that the location of the account originated from Russia, as did the accounts in Vancouver and Calgary. Within hours, the location settings were changed to "Private," once people started to take notice.

If we did an IP location search for every account on this forum, I guarantee a few would originate from Russia. Perhaps it is time to ignore all MAGA loons, and just communicate with ordinary Canadians. The last straw for me, was people claiming they are Canadian, defending Trump's 25% tariffs.

Undoubtedly to me, some are posting as agents of several foreign agencies.  Incredible when you think of it.  I have seen posts on Facebook and Twitter, and followed the posters past posts only to find out that this creamy-white apple pie mom or dad posted in Cyrillic a year or two ago !

When I was a moderator here we had posters who were obviously using VPNs to log in.  One, who still posts, was suspected of using a VPN because their city would show as 'Vancouver' then two hours later 'Toronto' !  I have called that person out on here for being a returned 'banned' poster and they don't deny it.

When you think about why democracy was created, it was done because a collaborative body is a better model for producing good solutions than a single decision point, ie. a monarch or dictator.  Such a body constitutes a 'public' and its members are named and have a stake in the common good.  While there IS a place for anonymous contributions (Benjamin Franklin wrote articles as "Poor Richard" in periodicals he published in his day) there has never been a recognition that outsiders should be allowed to post anonymously.  That should be obvious.

 

What's the solution ?

 

Some governments are now trying to wrestle control back from "social" media  The Five Eyes countries and Nordic countries ( https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-45976-4_12 ) are taking steps in this direction with the knowledge that it's a tricky path between the right to self-expression and what is called in that article "EPISTEMIC RIGHTS".  That is, the right to knowledge.

Whenever thinking about technology, I always take it back to the cultural cradle of civilization: the close-knit TRIBE.  I ask "what would work for them ?".  And to me the best answer would be if people individually and collectively reinforced the tradition of listening to elders and adopting a skeptical stance to the 'crank'.  Skeptical, which does not mean dismissive.  One weirdo per generation has a good idea and even Trump's button-mashing approach to governance has taught us a few things.

So... listen to elders, put liars and propagandists on IGNORE, and tolerate the cranks without giving them too much attention and our social media will be more closely attuned to community IMO.
