Truman confronted the Communists. Eisenhower. JFK. LBJ, Nixon - .ordinary guys in Vietnam.

NATO. SEATO.

Ultimately, Reagan won. The Berlin Wall is no more. Deng. Singapore.

The world - people - are now free to trade.

====,

Since Gorbachov, 1990s, we live in a different world.

You Americans now live in a multi-polar world.

====,

And "free" to not.

But isn't monopoly still a concern?  Embargo?  Are we truly free to trade if a bully tells us not to?

Are you free to do things that your government prohibits?

Chinese EVs are $20K, can you just buy one?

You can't.  Even without socialism, the state matters Auguste...

I don't believe that communist countries are unable to trade.  Cuba is currently the closest to a communist country and they are very eager to trade, but prevented by the US embargo.  That is changing, of course.  They have joined BRICS and I believe it will be difficult for even the US to prevent trade from happening between Cuba & other BRICS members.

I changed the order of your questions to hopefully better address them more accordingly in light of the thread title and OP.

1. We're apparently entering an era where something like the libertarian fantasy of a small government limited to just defence and enforcing a couple of handfuls of laws will prevail and we'll all be unleashed. Received wisdom informs us that the state of being unleashed will be so opportune and enriching for all that there'll be little to no need for social spending or taxes. The unleashed market will solve virtually all our social problems - almost like a budget that balances itself when you think about it.

2. I'd like to know how individuals will be able to compete in a sudden shift to a libertarian economy on an economic playing field that comes with so many long since baked-in immensely powerful not to mention influential oligarchs, wealthy families and corporations.

Call me idealistic but it seems to me at the start of a new game everyone should be entering the playing field with the same opportunities.

3. Paradoxically the importance of the state in the scheme of things i.e. it's laws and regulations....especially those dedicated to the defense of wealth...will likely only grow and vastly outstrip those dedicated to keeping the vast majority within society free to prosper. If we thought the influence of lobbying is intense now wait until the size of the government is so small that access to it becomes as limited.

If the few laws we decide to keep are mostly dedicated to making the world as safe and cheap for the top percentile as possible, enforcement will need to be swift, brutal and cost efficient. It'll clearly take a bully.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Trump America vs Deep-State...

Presumably the Deepstate is hidden amongst the civil service, effectively using it like a shield, destroying it will be like destroying Hamas - the carnage will be widespread and disproportionate. Trump has already made the line between collateral and deliberate carnage as blurry as possible.

Chuds who cheer it on will be like people who set up BBQ's and tailgate parties to watch bombs falling on Gaza.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Disagree.

China and Vietnam now allow free trade. They have adopted the Singapore Lee Kwan Yew model: free markets. Even Russia under Putin has done the same.

Reagan won, Communism lost.

The Communists/Marxists/Bolsheviks wanted to change the world.

In the 1950s, we in the West were facing people who wanted to take-over the world.

NATO was created to stop them.

Reagan won in 1989.

=====

Sadly, in 2010s or so, we live in a world like Europe in 1912, the world of the Titanic.

We believe all is well.

In Korea.Vietnam, Berlin, Cuba, Chile: You Americans defeated the Marxists - people who wanted to change the world.

We are now back to the usual Kissinger/Trudeau Snr/European world of counterweights.
