Instead of naming themselves after and entire continent?    Of which several other countries reside on the same continent (whether it be North, South or Central America) and name their citizens after their own countries because we have some pride in the significance of the country upon which we live. For arguments sake, just because Panama dug a trench it doesn't mean that the continent is not connected, I mean there is such a thing as continental drift if such a thing were significant
