The BC gov't just did the same thing. This week they finally lifted the pandemic restrictions on hospital employees, allowing unvaccinated health care workers to come back to work, and that only happened now because their opponents in the October election vowed to do that exact thing.

Yeah that was hilarious.  Also they've started yelling at trudeau about the ultra high immigration that they've been cheering for the last 10 years that the polls say people blame for higher housing prices

Evan Gershkovich was detained in March of 2023. 14 months went by with him wasting away in a Russian prison, when in May of 2024 Trump started saying that he was gonna get him out. Lo and behold, just 2 months later, it's the Biden administration's highest priority. Less than 3 months later he's out. 

Then when he gets out, you say that "Biden stole Trump's thunder". 

Did Biden collude with Russians to get that swap done? 😳

I feel like both sides are kind of wrong there. 

A corrupt foreign gov't took people hostage and was able to give back innocent people who were no real threat in exchange for some of the most dangerous people on earth.  ANd this is not the first time by far. 

I'm happy for the familes, and maybe you could argue that this had to happen or was the lesser of evils but we've just normalized taking hostages to get bad guys back so that they can harm the country later.  

Is this really a victory? Should we be doing this regardless of who's in power?

I think we celebrate their return, but the Biden administration and their supporters doing a big victory lap on this as if it was some remarkable feat of diplomacy is both disturbing and absurd. 

When you pay off the terrorist thug with evil people, spies, and thugs to get back your own innocent people he took hostage... that is no great feat of diplomacy.

Just because the US said those guys weren't spies means less than nothing to me. If Chuck Shumer and Nancy Pelosi both swear on a stack of bibles that something is true it budges my needle the other way.

IMO there's probably a 90% chance that those guys were spies. What reason would the Russians have for just locking up random civilians? 

Also, one of the Americans was a 'journalist'... IMO a Russian jail is a pretty good spot for most journalists these days, spy or not.

I get why the Americans want to bring their people back, their primary job is the protection of their own citizens, but it would be pretty naive of us to think that "none of those people were guilty of what they're accused of."

Well, they may or may not have been 'spies' whatever that means.  But we KNOW that Vladim was a murderer who killed people for the gov't. We know that most of the others committed real crimes, many serious. 

I'm just not sure that sending the message "hey if you go commit murder on behalf of our gov't and get caught we'll just corral some innocent people and do  a swap" is the message we want to be sending. 

I preferred our 'no negotiation with terrorists' attitude.
