Just how far should the B.C. government go in trying to settle land claims and appease FNs?

Will you please stop channelling cdnfox.

Will you please stop being so contradictory.

You want transparency but it is OK to do what you want and tell no one after you got the money.

I don't see eye to eye with cdnfo most of the time but at  least he is constant and not wanting one thing but then not wanting it LOL

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.

You want to know where the money first nations get goes?
As if it's any of you're business I will still tell you how it goes here:

A new school in cooperation with the Catholic Church and the School District. Modern, network wired, mesh wireless and modern boards. many more rooms and kindergarten to Gr 7. Cafeteria with snacks, breakfasts and lunches, because they need them. Open to all, if you're not Catholic or native by donation of money or volunteer services.
A new Health center on the rez, with rec rooms and playgound for the kids of waiting clients. Doctors shared with the town and a couple more of them because of it. A large daycare center.
Street lights, paved roads, stop signs, sewer lines throughout the rez. Fences along the highway frontage.
An outdoor rink and a skateboard park, a forestry building and reopened the fish hatchery. Native Law office, a Men's House.
Grants for other groups on reserve women's groups, drug prevention, elders societies, daycare staffing and plenty of other things.
A big supermarket and a large gas station whilst the adjacent town LOST one supermarket and all of it's gas stations.

Like I said, as if you think indigenous people are completely different than yourself and prefer to believe the myths of bigots that it's all squandered and stolen as they're all corrupt, that's your problem not theirs.

MOF they've done far more for the people on the rez than ALL levels of govt have for the people of town here over the last 20 years.

The first nations get billions. Are you telling me that with those billions all they got was a school a playground a health center and a supermarket?

That's your argument for the idea that the money wasn't squandered?

Treaties have been one of the biggest economic drivers in my region for years now.

That said I do look a little wistfully at how access to fish and timber have changed and developed along cultural lines - even picking mushrooms, digging clams and harvesting/collecting other things including firewood now are becoming exclusive to First Nations where I live.  There's still a few opportunities and options for others but It's so different now.

It's really visible in commercial trolling for salmon. Native boats can use barbed hooks, any number of lines or type of flashers, spoons or plugs - they start fishing a couple months before anyone else and can keep any species they catch.

Everyone else is restricted to catching one species using barbless hooks on big plugs only - they usually start 2 months later and often outside the most productive areas and abundance timing windows.

Ottawa's fisheries science has always left a lot to be desired and so does the political science it brings to management.

It is what it is and not a bit of it will change under Poilievre or Rustad.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Years ago when there was a payout for something or other, I would shake my head when other shoo owners griped about the natives and their free money.
It all ended up in our pockets FFS. I had 7 full time employees in my store then down to two in the end.

Everyone was working, building and wiring up new homes and shops on the rez - and they're the ones still there and open!

Sure. When governments hand out fake money that wasn't earned it leads to a false economy that eventually has to implode. That's why it's so important to let capitalism do its job and avoid wealth redistribution and the stupidity of the left

I recall the day they filmed us waving our little centennial flags while singing '1 little 2 little 3 Canadians' when I was a kid growing up in Toronto.

I'll never forget the day just a few short years later at the start of my life as a young logger and fisherman on the west coast and meeting a fellow from the reserve walking up the road hollering 'Its all mine!' 'They're giving it all back!' he said over and over. He was clearly a little nukchoo and seemed cheerful but I asked him if he was okay and he simply asked me 'you didn't get the letter'? 'They're giving it all back' he said as he waved his arm around us. Giving what back I asked, as he continued on his way, 'Everything!' he said, 'because it's mine'! It was years later when what he was telling me and it's importance sunk in.

They never taught me anything that might indicate why this might be important when I was going to school. I wish they had. When governments hand out opportunities stolen from other people it leads to a false sense of nationalism that eventually, amongst other things, needs to be reconciled with.

It was one of those events where I can definitely say if I'd only known then what I know now. That was nearly 50 years ago and I'll always be thankful I sank roots down here but I wish I could have rooted them more firmly in reality instead of the crap they tried to teach me in school. It clearly left me ill-prepared.

Well Mr Rustad will bring back those days of roadblocks and discontent. From a riding that's heavily indigenous he's promised to tear up the legislation that guarantees them input on decisions over traditional lands and go back to consultation.

"We did consult you. We told you we're building an oil pipeline through your reserve!"

You mean like the ones we had under the NDP and Horgan?

And if they're smart they'll realize that's what happens when a deal doesn't benefit both sides.

Yeah. Probably better if they work out something that's fair rather than being dicks to the rest of canada. Becasue at the end of the day if the public gets sick of their bullshit things will change. And if they rely on violence or protests and the public gets sick of that - things will change again.  And they may not like it.  It does not pay to play cowboys and indians.
