Well if you look back on the day that they announced the dates of the debates I went on record as wondering whether this was because they wanted to try him out before the actual convention   It was my first thought when I heard the debate was going to be in june.

Having said that, while I do believe there was a certain bit of that involved the fact is they really only have one other alternative and that is Kamala Harris. Biden can step down and let his VP run. But there's really no other provisions that allow for them to just go and pick someone new. And the donations don't follow, any money that's been raised for Biden Harris can't be transferred to a new person. That's hundreds of millions of dollars that would be locked up and the donors will have already given their money and probably wouldn't be interested in giving any more.

I think they're thinking was that if the debate went badly doing it this early would give them time to adjust and rejig his message. But I think it went a lot worse than anyone thought.

Just one more thing that needs to be said here. If Joe blows this, out of obstinacy or I can't imagine what, he has to understand that it would be nothing like "we gave it our honest try and now it's time for the memoirs". This is nothing like "just another election". If it disintegrates the democracy and the world standing of the United States - and good if not the free world itself it would all go on Joe's personal and individual legacy record. For generations.

Hope he understands that and can still understand. And those around him, who talk to him have a duty to the public to make it known whether he can still understand such matters.

When you say "sane" America it makes me worry: you guys were capable of using words with up to 5 letters as recently as last week, and now your command of 4-letter words is slipping. 

2) He's about a 1 out of 10 as a human and as a politician. That's arguably still the best that the Dems can put fwd. It's not like they have 3's or 4's now that Gabbard and Manchin have left them. They might have a 2, but I don't know who that would be. Definitely not Pelosi, Shumer, AOC (or any squad member for that matter), etc.
