I am Canadian. Pierre Trudeau taught me about the dangers of nationalism.

He evidently did not teach you much about European history, common sense or articulate communication.

On the contrary.

Trudeau, like Kissinger and Nixon, favoured counterweigths.

If Ukraine had not given up her nuclear weapons, Russia would not have attacked her.

That is the opinion of Mearsheimer.

In many ways, I agree with him. In others, I disagree

You are thinking like too many Americans. You think that this is the world of the 1930s

Queenmandy, you think that Putin is another Hitler. I strongly disagree.

IMHO, we are in a world similar to the 1910s. As then, there is the potential for collective suicide.

I think that now, in the 2020s, we are in a world that needs negotiation, a new structure pf peace.

The cataclysm of Summer 1914 was avoidable.

"You are thinking like too many Americans."

No. I am thinking of Sir Winston Churchill.

How do you negotiate an issue like Ukraine? Russia has no right to parts of Ukraine but will not withdraw. What compromise will Russia make? Putin is playing for time until President Trump resumes office in seven months.

I admit, you can negotiate with a bully. But first, you have to get his attention. The most practical attention acquisition method is to kick him repeatedly in the balls until he is down, and then stomp on him until he is willing to listen.

We tried to negotiate an "end" to the Korean War without success until the US offered to use nuclear weapons on the hydro-electric sites in Manchuria. (I may have the details of that wrong because I just woke up, but that is the jist of the event.) Suddenly we had a ceasefire.

JFK negotiated with Russia over the Cuban missile crisis by assuring the Russians that if they did not remove their missiles, he would destroy the world. Chairman Khrushchev was a wise man and saved the world. He paid a heavy price and retired with a smile.

Like all bullies, President Putin is a coward.

President Biden might consider pointing out to President Putin that if Russia withdraws completely and pays compensation to Ukraine and returns the 2940 warheads removed from Ukraine by fraud, the US will not turn Russia into a radioactive glass plate. To make sure the Russians understand, President Biden can point out he is a frail old man facing defeat so he has nothing to lose.

This can be seen as a drastic response, but When President Trump is back in office and gives Putin a free pass, the end result will be the same. If President Putin gets the Donbas and Crimea through negotiation, he will attack again to take the rest of Ukraine. There will be a second Holodomor to exact revenge.  Without US support for NATO, Putin will attack a NATO member. That will trigger Article 5. The UK and France will respond and there will be a general nuclear exchange.

The cole's notes version is, if Russia does not withdraw from all of Ukraine, we will have World War Three.

I wasn't referring to President Trump in this case. Putin is the yellow bellied bully I was referring to. 😉

I was going to say he's not a bully. Then I remembered some of the women he has had issues with and I can't say he's not a bully. So sure, take your best shot.

It is funny that so many nations are shifting from left to right...except the UK. They are going the other way. But then, they drive on the wrong side of the road too.

It is interesting but not unexpected.  The existing governments have failed us. The public throughout Europe, Canada and the USA are p1ssed right off.

Putin is neither a bully nor a coward.

IMHO, he is a typical Slav - stubborn.

After 1998, I was not surprised when Yeltsin chose someone like Putin - but I was surprised how well Putin did.

Tony Blair flew often to Russia in the early 2020s.

These were times of great potential.
