Poilievre: Purple Thunb

Recommended Posts

Is your purpose so you can look down on and feel superior to people on election day? Or is it ingrained behaviour from your days of night clubbing?

Two threads of a meaningless and ineffective policy? Why not give them a $100 tax credit when they deposit their ballot? That rewards them, encourages people to vote and doesn't punish anyone who chooses not to.

And yet you as well as I know of many people that don't vote.
If you nail them on it, they're full of bullshit excuses... I was too busy... the Boss wouldn't "let" me... their religion doesn't allow them to...

That's why my incentive suggestion if you want more people to participate. Training your dog or your kid with a treat works far better than punishing or humiliating them.

When we vote in a federal election in Canada, We should be tattooed

When a person votes in a democracy, they should be proud.

AG, you entirely miss my points: Verification, Shaming, Signal.

Let me start last first.

1. A purple thumb means that I live in a democracy. (A Rolex shows I'm rich.)

2. You can't vote twice.

3. Shame? I am proud to live in a democracy.

When we in Canada vote, we should dip our thumb in purple ink.

It shows we voted.

And Canada is a civilised country.

You Americans have complicated ballots with many names.

In Canada, it is a simple X beside one name.

While it isn't wise to say it out loud too much, first off people have a right not to cast a ballot. And it's a right that should be respected because there are perfectly valid reasons. When you don't cast a ballot that you're qualified to cast that's called abstaining. And our system does recognize and staining has a valid choice, although it doesn't like it. You are essentially saying that a) You don't believe any of the choices are worth your support or b)  You don't feel qualified to make a decision and you are leaving it up to other Canadians instead of taking the time to do so.

To be honest I believe that the option to abstain should be on the ballot. You should be able to go in and mark abstain and have your ballot count for no one. That sends a very powerful message. Literally you saying it's not that I wouldn't vote I did take the time to come in, I just think you're all so useless that I'm not prepared to give any of you my support. That there is a disenfranchised group out there whose votes could be grabbed if they were better represented.

The problem is as you say everybody and their dog uses that for an excuse to be lazy people.

On the other hand, if people don't care enough to show up and want to leave it in the hands of those of us who do maybe that's fine. They can sit back and live with the results. Maybe if they don't like the results they'll realize it that really does matter to get out and vote

Disagree.

In many countries,, people are proud to vote -secretly. We live in an InstagraméYoutibe world. A purple finger shows that I voted, secretlly.

Well you ARE a bit of a commie sometimes so the whole "freedom" thing is probably  a little vague to you :)

Joking aside - for the right to vote to have any meaning logically it must include the right not to vote. OR it's just the appearance of democracy

So let them vote secretly.

If you show you voted, then it isn't secretly. That's literally not voting secretly, that's voting very publicly,  It is announcing to the whole world that you voted - the opposite of doing it secretly.

I know english is your second language and honestly yours is usually quite good but i think you need to revisit that and double check if you perhaps meant to say something else.

Just say out loud you abstain without these bullshit excuses. You have the right not to, Every excuse I quoted is bullshit. And yes, lazy is a big one.
Walked into the room and there were 8 kids smoking dope. They asked who won the election so I told them "The guy who will NOT legalize pot. By FOUR votes. You're all over 18, don't you wish you'd gone to vote?". But I bet even now decades later none of them ever have. Probably think the people that do vote are the stupid ones that don't matter.

You aren't too busy when you've had  months to prepare.
There ISN'T a religion that bans you outright from voting
Your Boss is required by law to allow you the time to vote, union or non union.
The party I like can't win anyways

the most common excuses. Rather than admitting
I don't want to
I don't feel qualified to decide
I don't like any of the choices

The guy's suggesting stamping your thumb like voting was held in some third world country for the very first time or like admission a night club. Zero reason or benefit.
I proposed a suggestion, are you not able to do the same? Rather than grovelling about for some semantic interpretation to claim every poster is really claiming something other than what they said and arguing to that point?

Yeah.  Well like they say, the best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter :)

Elections matter and voting matters but it's hard to get people to get that into their heads sometimes. But for some reason they'll spend hours pouring over the stats looking at who'll win the stanley cup.  Nothing wrong with sports of course but seriously, which 'win' is going to have a bigger impact on your life?

No, i get your points, your comments reminded me of what happened in Afghanistan, those with purple thumbs were rounded up and shot by taliban forces...It was a stupid system then and it sounds a lot crazier now...

Nobody in Canada cares if you vote or not...let alone wants to have a purple thumb for weeks on end...see it is a right you have , nowhere does it say you need to vote, or even show up at the voting centers. it is a Canadians right to do what they want with that vote, use it or not... it is a personal decision.....

A purple thumb means nothing, except having to scrub it off for days at a time...

you can't vote twice now...do you think this is a major issue with todays voting practices...

Not everyone is proud to live in this democracy, it has it moments, but far from perfect...but there is a long list of things that are wrong with this country and how our democracy works right now...we are as corrupt as any other democracy not something to be proud about...we have many things we need to work on in this country, all of us getting purple thumbs is not one of them.

I think Herbie has a point here purple thumbs are not going to bring in more voters, nor does it accomplish anything except visually point out who those that did not vote, who really cares, what reasons you have for not voting, it all comes down to priorities in everyone's lives...

Giving them a 100.00 that talks to canadians of all strips...they may be lazy, or don't have time to keep up with platforms or speaches, promises.....but give them money, and every Canadian will stop and vote....purple thumb only means your going to sell more soap.... I did not vote last election, there was no choices i like on the ballets...so i refrained...my right and i can use it anyway i want.

Nope. That's not how crime works. Those crimes were 100% the fault of Palestine and Gaza it was their choice they really really wanted to commit those crimes. Because they are evil. And you support them
