Boy, all I can say is I'm glad we left Scarborough, and none too soon.

It was a bloody weekend in the Greater Toronto Area when a teenager watching a high-school basketball tournament in Scarborough was shot in the stomach and three others at a Mississauga house party were the victims of gunfire.

A man was shot in front of his daughter in the area of Don Mills and the 401 Friday evening.

From link above:

Rosanna Cavallaro, director of marketing and communications at Centennial College, described the shooting as "one of those situations that really could have happened anywhere."

What is that supposed to mean?

I don't intend to be partisan but during the campaign, Harper said that it is not a luxury to walk streets in Canada but an ordinary right. It most of Canada it is. But apparently, in parts of Toronto, people are afraid of "situations that can happen anywhere".

The Left blames Mike Harris and right-wing cutbacks but Canada, and let's admit this, has among the most generous social expenditures of any country in the world. (The money may be spent ineffectively but the money is allocated.) As a rich country, we spend far more on social affairs than many poorer countries in Asia or elsewhere. As a rich jurisdiction, Toronto probably devotes more money on a per caita basis to social affairs than, say, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland.

We have to do something differently; we have to use the money now allocated better. Anybody who says we have to put more "resources" into this is just wrong. Throwing more money at the problem is not going to solve it.

It does that, August! If you ignore the more generous expenditures of every advanced country other than the one next to us. The one that has the same problem that we are talking about.

It is sad that this is happening but it was entirely predictable and things will probably get worse before they get better. Since the criminals do not seem to be obeying the law that means that bill C68 has only disarmed the victims of crime. This is making criminals the largest armed group in the country and problems must escalate as a result. It is sad that the government allowed hysterical lunatic fringers to talk them into such foolish laws in the first place.
