Alberta uses Sovereignty Act for 1st time. What happens now?

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she’s using the province’s Sovereignty Act for the first time to challenge Ottawa’s requirements to have a net-zero electricity grid by 2035.

Smith said she wanted to invoke the act to send a message that her government is serious about pushing back against Ottawa’s plan to green Canada’s electricity grid by 2035, a plan she says could wreak havoc on Alberta’s natural gas-based grid.

“We’re creating an opportunity for the federal government to do the right thing and back down,” Smith told reporters.

“We’re sending the message: ‘Keep working with us on our 2050 target.'”

The motion calls for the Alberta government to take several actions, the most notable among them to empower provincial officials and regulators not to co-operate with the federal regulations, currently in draft form but soon expected to be enacted, so long as the province doesn’t break federal law.

Kinda surprised this slid under the radar here, but it's pretty big.

And this is in addition to Saskatchewan's recent announcement they wont' be collecting carbon tax on home heating fuels, which is in direct conflict with federal law.

Not that trudeau seems to give a crap about his rep anymore - but this kind of thing is usually very bad for the feds. Nobody likes to see provinces and the feds openly up in arms.

It will be interesting to watch as that battle develops how the public in general reacts to it - whether they see it as fair for ottawa to punish 'rogue' provinces (other than quebec) or if the public rebels against it and decides it's divisive and overreach on ottawa's part

Ironically they burn natural gas there to create their electricity...

They had coal-fired plants until a few years ago, but they had to convert them to Nat Gas so that they could ship all of their coal to China where I guess it can be burned without releasing greenhouse gases ?‍?? 

Now they're saying: "Don't burn nat gas in your homes for heat. Instead, use electricity that's created by...   burning   uh  naaaatu....hhhhhh I'm going through hhhhhhh a tunnel so you probably can't hhhhhhhhhhh hear me right now."

They simply need to build several massive power reactors in the next 5 years or so. That shouldn't be a problem...

Now now - you know how the environmentalists feel about nuclear reactors.

And yeah, sure - the people of alberta just HATE using natural gas.  They think it's terrible. So she's definitely working against the people. Someone must 'own' her because she's not doing what you personally want.

A "sovereign" provincial government versus the federal government.

The US has a 10th Amendment (my favourite): - People are free to do as they wish unless the central  government specifically says otherwise. And if not, the state/province can restrict - otherwise the people are free to do as they wish.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with people using natural gas. It has to do with multi-billion dollar companies not willing to change as slow and cheap as possible and Smith's distraction that being on her knees deep throating them is "standing up to Ottawa".

Oh? And how exactly would you suggest they should "Change slow and cheap" by  the 2030's?  How would that be possible? THe gov't law requires it but offers nothing to make it happen?

They're already well into the process to buy nukes, but that'll be a couple decades before they can replace their NG generators.  So - what else can they do exactly?
