I don't know about you, but I find this is extremely concerning. Censorship groups in Canada hold already a big enough power, and look at what they do when they have more control in another country similar to ours. Hate Speech laws will become more and more stringent in the West and the movement to imprison people with contrarian or deemed-offensive ideas will become more and more common. You may disagree with insulting someone, and are maybe advocating for a more civilized society yourself, but this is a step in the wrong direction, and creates a martyr as well as a precedent.

Swiss LGBTQ+ rights groups hail 60-day sentence for polemicist who called journalist a 'fat lesbian'

GENEVA -

LGBTQ+ groups are hailing the 60-day jail sentence a court in Switzerland gave to a writer and commentator for deriding a journalist as a "fat lesbian" and other critical remarks.

The Lausanne court sentenced French-Swiss polemicist Alain Bonnet, who goes by Alain Soral, for defamation, discrimination and incitement to hatred on Monday.

He was ordered to pay legal fees and fines totaling thousands of Swiss francs (dollars) in addition to the time behind bars.

Soral lashed out at Catherine Macherel, a journalist for Swiss newspapers Tribune de Geneve and 24 Heures, in a Facebook video two years ago.

Switzerland made it illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation in 2020.

There was a similar case in the UK last year. Some teenager angry at a football player for missing a kick or something called him a 'black bastard' in a tweet and went to jail for it.

The thing is, if he'd called him a bastard he'd have been fine. If he'd used a dozen vicious pejorative words to describe him, insulted his wife, cursed him, etc. he'd have been fine. But he included the term 'black' which isn't even an insult in itself.

This is how insane these laws are. You can insult someone for their hair style, or lack of hair, for bad skin, narrow eyes or bug eyes, big nose, bad teeth, big mouth, big ears, being skinny, being fat, being short, being tall, being flat chested 9f you're a girl, or having big breasts, being wimpy or a steroid case for guys, having a little dick, being stupid, ignorant, low class, can suggest they copulate with dogs and pigs and horses, or that their mother obviously did, suggest they're fascists or racists or homophobic or islamophpobic or transphobic or any number of other things.

But mentioning they're black! EEEEEK! Can't add that to the mix!

Probably the same in Switzerland. Calling them fat was fine. Adding that they were a fat woman would be fine too. But fat lesbian? EEEEK!

It's stupid and will only lead to more anger, more venom, more hatred.

Yes, we're aware of your eagerness for censorship laws and punishing those who have different views than you, Mr. Voice of Reason.

I understood.  I think this is one area where there won't be much disagreement on the issue.  Any kind of sanction for insulting someone is wrong.  A jail term is insane.

A young girl was placed under arrest in the UK recently for telling a policewoman she reminded her of her "lesbian gran".  Thankfully she was released without charge, but she was taken down and processed.

That'll certainly make it a lot easier to round them up.

What we really need is something that has the same effect on a chud that yodeling has on a Martian.

Seems to be trendy and vogue to press charges on people who dare oppose the new mainstream obsession with gender.

Father who won’t stop discussing opposition to child’s gender transition taken into custody

A B.C. father who has been a vocal critic of his transgender child’s decision to pursue hormone treatment was placed in handcuffs Tuesday and remanded into custody at least until the end of the week after being rebuked by a judge for “persistently and consistently” violating court-ordered publication bans restricting what he can say about the case.

There are groups calling for Children's Aid society to remove the kids from homes where parents protest and charge parents with child abuse.

If this is the guy I'm thinking of, it's not as simple as "discussing opposition"...   This is a few years old - I think the child may have aged out already but here's one point...

"Last July, Crown counsel filed an application in B.C. Supreme Court, seeking a finding that the father had committed criminal contempt of court — an offence that can result in five years imprisonment."

Should have taken a page from Donald Trump, and called her a fat pig, instead.

Such laws are ridiculous, and if there is any democracy still, could easily be fought anyways.

That's nice quote, "contempt of court" here is violating the courts order not to refer to the child publicly by their original birth pronouns.

Six months.

Yes that's right.

You can be ordered to do almost anything by the court if they determine it's harrassment.  This case has been covered before, with the father actually tormenting and Commiting verbal abuse on his trans kid.

You think he should be able to do that if the court has found that he shouldn't?

Given the details, is the context free summary fair?

Most definitely there is a movement to do that. You've been shown links. You are entitled to find all the excuses you want to make, but that is the mentality and attitude coming out today.

What terrifies me is that kind of 'do-gooder Ned Flanderesque' vibe that comes with that censorship. It's always for the good that censorship must be applied. Insulting someone, in my opinion, should not be grounds for an imprisonment. This will lead to power trippers/literal tyrans to abuse that power at their advantage when the time comes.

What does that have to do with an abusive father though?  Or are you admitting that your evidence is faulty?

Don't be a Chud, now, own your inflammatory rhetoric.

That he won the appeal with a different court also demonstrates the 6 month sentence was over the top.

Reduced sentence?

But still guilty?

Ok.

Thank you for clarifying, I thought the parody Michael could have been the real one, after all, Poe's law.

In the case of the person imprisoned for 60 days for calling an activist he despised a 'Fat Lesbian" in Switzerland, what do you think of the imprisonment sentence yourself?

Oh hey.. the poor Dad he had to file a victims impact statement!

Oh no sorry THAT WAS HIS SON....

"  Facing the possibility of additional jail time, a B.C. father who repeatedly flouted court orders in order to wage a public campaign against his transgender child’s gender-affirming treatment told a judge Wednesday he may have got caught up in the publicity and put his trust in people with ulterior motives.

The court also heard this week from the teenager, who said in a statement his father’s defiance of publication bans left him feeling anxious and terrified he would be outed.

“Over and over private stuff about me was published online because of my dad. I have lost my faith that the courts can protect me. That makes me feel really vulnerable,” he wrote in a victim-impact statement submitted to the court, a copy of which was obtained by the Star."

Sounds like a great dad...

But, no, this is proof of the weakness of the courts don't you know?

It's ridiculous... Insults, and I'm assuming this is a casual one, do not warrant government action.

In this case, sorry OftenWrong, but you were wrong. BADUM TSSSS

Clearly, the father wasn't being persecuted because he 'questioned' his child's gender identity. It was because he didn't follow a court order in general.

Is that the stand-up comic one? Yeah that was tougher because the public was in favor of charging the guy..

Also the BC dad was released early because apparently his lawyer didn't tell him that the plea deal that was offered was pretty good. The guy's lawyer is now being investigated by the bar association.

I live in Quebec and know it was very half-half. Many were agreeing to charging the comedian, while the other half was totally against and thought of it as an attack on free speech.

Isn't the first step before imprisonment a punishment by a fine?

He made a joke by making fun of the kid's look. It took the Supreme Court to say, no, we're not going to get involved in that kind of censorship and we have a right to free speech in Canada. Asshles are not necessarily criminals.
