Will prominent Socialist Olivia Chow win Toronto Mayoralty Race?

Recommended Posts

Former prominent NDP MP and widow of popular NDP leader Jack Layton,   Olivia Chow has thrown her hat into the ring for the position of Toronto Mayor.   Strong possibility she will win for several reasons.

1.  Her name is well known.  She is so prominent that her candidacy is major news on the national television news networks today.

2.  She is a strong advocate for Socialism which many in the GTA believe is the answer to society's troubles.

3.  She is a skilled public speaker.

4.  She promises everything to the less privileged (at the expense of taxpayer's of course because where else would the money come from?)

5.  Last but not least.  She very cleverly founded "The Institute for Change Leaders".  This organization has trained one thousand leaders or political activists to advance Socialist politics and power.  This has to come from the Communist or Socialist red book.  Very powerful political moves.

Most people in the GTA don't understand the consequences of Socialism but incorrectly think it is the answer to all problems.

"In 2015, Olivia Chow joined Ryerson University as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. Her work focuses on community engagement and leadership development. As a founder of the Institute for Change Leaders, Olivia and her team of 30+ trainers have taught community and political organizing to over 1350 people since March of 2015. "

"Socialism fails because it suffers from four fundamental design defects.

First, socialism eradicates private property and markets and thus eliminates rational calculation.

Second, socialism allows soft budgets, so there is no mechanism in place to discard inefficient production methods.

Third, abolishing private property and replacing it by the state distorts the incentives.

Four, the socialist system with its absence of private property and of free markets inhibits the economic coordination of the system of division of labor and capital."

More government regulations and red tape making it more difficult for businesses and more difficult for home builders.  That has been common in Canadian municipalities and one reason for the huge shortage of homes.  Increased costs for building and road blocks to development of green spaces around cities.  More government intervention in business and development means less free enterprise and means higher costs for everything.

"One of the challenges to achieving this goal is that housing policy has traditionally been led by municipal governments. This has created a misalignment of interests. The provincial government is well-placed to set goals for the province as a whole, but municipalities answer only to local voters, who often oppose new housing."

Ontario’s growth targets won’t solve the province’s housing crisis (irpp.org)

So what you have are vast numbers of self-centred people living in apartments and houses in the cities who have imbibed the propaganda from environmental activists like Greta Thornberg and other environmental radicals.  They already have homes and places to live and ignorantly believe the environment, forests and wildlife are threatened by building new apartments and housing on the edge of town.  It is a lose, lose situation for the millions of Canadians who can't afford homes.

The worst offenders to the housing crisis are Socialists or interventionist politicians and parties often at the municipal level.

An example of how it works with municipalities is a large company wants to build several thousand new homes on the edge of town in my province which is presently forested with a large pond and some wildlife.  Environmentalists have organized and oppose the development that would build thousands of badly-needed homes and create thousands of good-paying jobs for five years.  Since these environmental organizations are well-organized and hold public meetings to oppose these kind of developments and print propaganda.   Local municipal politicians often listen to them and therefore block or make it very difficult to get anything done or built.

Seems so damn stuck on American GOP partisan dogma he can't even mention Chow's party affiliation, only his extremist interpretation of what it stands for.

I laugh at Canadian dinosaurs who call them socialists instead of NDP.

I laugh heartily comrade. They once even claimed to be....

Does anyone know of any politician anywhere in Canada who wants to eliminate private property?

Socialists don't have to eliminate private property.  Your idea of eliminating private property is a red herring.  Why would they?  They simply take control of what anyone does with it with regulations and tax the owner to death.  Regulate and tax is what Socialists do and what they are doing across Canada.  Chow will be good at that.

Of course, it depends on what you are referring to as "private property." Your vehicle, your house or your rifle, are private property. The land your house sits on is not your private property. You lease the land in a freehold lease, but you do not own it. All land in Canada is owned by the Crown.

Regulate and tax is what every government has ever done in Canada.

Your own definition you quoted in your post was that socialists want to eradicate private property. Now you admit that isn’t the definition.  I think you’re confused.

Just an added warning about Socialism for @Treebeard who doesn't get it.  Socialists can simply take control of private property by regulation and taxation.  They don't have to take legal ownership of property.  We know they impose heavy taxes and regulations on property.  So what is the difficulty in understanding the problem with Socialism?  One may continue to own property in the city but Socialists will make them pay a heavy price for it.

Toronto...city of Democracy...

Except sometimes...

Looneys might undermine democracy if they are allowed, but it seems to me they got rid of that one pretty quickly.

No doubt the guy has a screw loose. Yet...if he's is running for mayor...shouldn't we be able to hear him out?

No, there are over a hundred candidates running for the post and especially not if he has a screw loose.   Get a web page or something.

Although I didn't know he was running for mayor when I responded to your post above.  I was forced to reassess my view of it, regardless of my disagreement.

I trust he's going to lose his deposit.

Will you be voting for him?

You think skin colour is a determining factor on how well someone does as mayor?

Olivia Chow is a self-serving disaster who lived in rent reduced housing while her hubbie was in office.

She would be what we call..."a bad choice".
