Poll: Do you agree with Biden calling for assault weapons ban after the Nashville shooting?

U.S. President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass an assault weapons ban after six people, including three children, were killed in a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday, the White House said.

"We have to do more to stop gun violence. It’s ripping our communities apart,” Biden said at the White House. "I call on Congress again to pass my assault weapons ban."

It's a funding issue.  Congress is funded by gun manufacturers so the public opinion doesn't matter.

Something related, The Power of The NRA. Great documentary for next week.

I pretty much agree with anyone calling for an assault weapons ban anytime.

There ought to be a category of gun owner, call it "Collector", or "Enthusiast", or something like that, where this type of weapon (they wouldn't call them weapons.  I get my wrist slapped all the time) can be owned, but many hoops must be negotiated first.

No-one else should even get close to owning one.

Why not?

We tried banning drugs and look what happened. Plus, most of the gun nuts in America are right-wing psychopaths  itching for a civil war. If anything, I want more sane people to own guns to defend themselves.

We could have red flag laws and close the loopholes, though.

So if Nashville is the new flag we're going march behind to gun grab I'd like to know more about this psycho's mental health.

I think that might matter.

The poster above seems to agree. They seem to want us to believe it was a "right wing psychopath."

Apparently it was either a 28 year old woman pretending to be a guy or a guy who thought he was a girl.

So which was it? They seem to be hiding the info. Whichever it was, it was messed up and to the average person speaking in the privacy of a bar or his living room indicates some sort of mental imbalance behind pulling the trigger, which is pretty much always behind these sorts of crimes.

They probably should be banned, but maybe not for the reasons most people think, and it certainly isn't even a good down payment on effective gun control.

Whenever the assault weapons ban is discussed, gun "enthusiasts" are eager to tell the world that "assault weapons" aren't a real thing and these guns are functionally no more dangerous than hunting rifles--that the differences are cosmetic. And what they say is true. But that doesn't mean there's no value to banning them. If people are into these guns for cosmetic rather than functional reasons, that's a bit of a red flag unto itself. They are fetishizing what is supposed to be a tool because it has a military look to it. If the guns are not functionally different, let's stop dressing them up as cool toys for people who like playing soldier the same way we stopped marketing cigarettes to kids. It's making the product appealing to the wrong market. Let the tool be a tool.

There was confusion about the gender identity of the assailant in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Officials used “she” and “her” to refer to the shooter, and Chief Drake said that the assailant identified as transgender.

---> There is also a manifesto present which was not shared yet.

---> The attacker, will not mention their name, shot dead three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee.

Anyone who performs a mass shooting is mentally deficient, right?  It’s clearly not a sane thing to do, agreed?

No, it's (bolded) NOT true. AR15 rounds are designed to destroy massive amounts of tissue on impact; to INSURE MAXIMUM DAMAGE. At that HIGH VELOCITY, rounds tumble through flesh and leave a much larger hole on exit than most other weapons. That is why the cops in Uvalde were deathly afraid of confronting the guy with ONE AR.

That's incorrect. You're describing one type of ammunition. The AR-15 is a rifle design. It does not call for special ammunition, and indeed there is no such thing as AR-15 ammunition. The AR-15 design can even accommodate multiple calibers. And the .223 rounds that you are likely describing can be fired from other semi-auto rifles that are not of the AR-15 design.

Those rifles have a distinctive look, but not a distinctive function.

They are AR-15 style rifles. There are a lot of clones of AR-15s.

IF terrorists buy an AR-15 style rifle, they will get that ammunition because that is the what makes it so much MORE deadly.

If it's a particular type of ammunition that they are pursuing, would they not simply choose another semi-automatic rifle of slightly different design that also takes those rounds? The point remains that banning AR-15s means banning something based on cosmetic distinctions rather than for performance or lethality.

It's sort of like banning red cars because red cars get the most tickets, when blue cars go just as fast and are just as dangerous. It's sort of feelgood legislation. If we were serious about gun control (and we should be) we'd be fighting over things that really matter rather than the appearance of one popular type of gun. I don't have any problem banning "assault weapons" but it's a drop in the bucket.

It mainly has to do with the Republicans' new views on parental rights.
