In DeSantis’s revised history curriculum, Rosa Parks wasn’t black or a civil rights activist

Florida textbook altered to remove references to Rosa Parks’s race: report

A Florida textbook publisher removed all references of race from a lesson about civil rights icon Rosa Parks in order to get a Florida committee’s approval, according to The New York Times.

Parks helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott after she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., bus in 1955.

In the current lesson by Studies Weekly, which is used in 45,000 elementary schools, the event is described: “The law said African Americans had to give up their seats on the bus if a white person wanted to sit down.”

But in an early version created for Florida’s review by Studies Weekly, the lesson changed to: “She was told to move to a different seat because of the color of her skin.”

In the group’s second updated version, race is removed completely from the lesson: “She was told to move to a different seat.”

Studies Weekly also made changes to their fourth-grade lesson about segregation laws.

In the initial version, the text explained how Black Americans were affected by Jim Crow laws that arose after the Civil War, but like its updates to the Parks lesson, the second version eliminated almost every direct mention of race. Instead, the lessons were changed to say it was illegal for “men of certain groups” to be unemployed and that “certain groups of people” were not allowed to serve on a jury.

Florida is currently reviewing social studies curriculum, which includes flagging any topics that could be deemed as critical race theory, a collegiate-level framework used to explain systemic racism in the United States that has become a political catch-all buzzword for any teaching on race.

CRT has no business being anywhere in our public school systems. It's a good move to keep even the slightest trace of it away from the kids.

There's nothing wrong with banning harmful books. Perverts may love your choice of acceptable reading, but civilized society does not.

Thanks for giving a somewhat non mob politics response.

This reminds me of the movie Minority Report. Have you seen it? Google it and read the plot.

So, what you are saying is that you don't trust the process, the courts, media, etc and you take it upon yourself to label people, public politicians, we are not talking about trolls here, but politicians in 2023 America, for engaging in"fascist" acts?

Does your process involve questions as during the McCarthy hearings? You just replace the word communist for fascist?

As I mentioned before, the court actually turned around 1 of DeSantis' laws, so why the fear mongering?

You want MAGA, he is better than DeSantis or is that you want MAGA because you keep hearing that it will be better for the Democrats when he will go against Biden? It is a posibility, yes.

1) Just because a fascist’s fascist agenda was stopped by “the process, the courts, media, etc” doesn’t meam that the fascist isn’t a fascist

2) Note that attacking and discrediting “the process, the courts, media, etc” with propaganda, conspiracy theories and even inciting violent mobs against these same institutions is now a standard tactic of Republicans. Meanwhile Texas is experimenting with creative ways of circumnavigating courts with its newly invented “bounty hunter” private civil suits against abortion supporters and drag queens. And Republican abuse of the emergency Supreme Court “shadow docket” process to fast-track non-urgent landmark decisions without due process is another attempt to short circuit “the process, the courts and the media etc”

So given you describe these institutions as bulwarks against fascism and that their mere existence proves fascism doesn’t exist, it sort of suggests that the Republican efforts to undermine or circumvent them is in fact fascism.

Hilarious claim completely invented by you with zero evidence. Nowhere in this company’s backpedaling denial do they claim to have been “infiltrated”. You are ridiculous man.

Don’t you feel like an absurd hypocrite for demanding mountains of evidence for claims you don’t like while you personally invent baseless claims and offer zero evidence? I mean usually you’ll at least link to right wing propagandist site as “evidence” of a questionable claim circulating in the conserve-o- sphere but here you are just winging it on your own  pathetic

As for the company’s incomplete claim that it was “unapproved” (and made submitted by whom?) that is highly doubtful and they offer no evidence to back up their story. They claim they discovered the “unapproved” material on their own but it was too late….so then they just did and said nothing?  No letter to the state of Florida calling out and apologizing for the error and asking for a redo?

The letter you linked to clearly states that the revisions were made because of the new Florida law which bans “suggesting that any group is inherently racist or implies that a person can be oppressed because of their race”  But course during the civil rights era people were inherently racist people were oppressed because of their race

Also note that does NOT say anyone was fired  That’s more of you made-up nonsense

BS. There are no “harmful” and “perverted” books in the school its just a made up witch hunt to ban ideas that don’t corroborate the current conservative ideology and culture war agenda.

The story of Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights movement have to be presented in a non-politicized environment - meaning, if a white kid goes home feeling like he's a total jerk because he's white, then the teacher failed in her delivery and should be fired immediately.

Do you think today's liberal teachers can present that kind of information without brow beating white kids?

But thanks Beave, you're right I didn't bother with the body of the OP because the title was such obvious BS it was all I saw.

But OK, now that you've pointed me to it how would you like to hear the rest of the story?

Start from the first page of Studies Weekly's website:

https://www.studiesweekly.com/

I can't copy and paste from there so I'll type you out a paragraph and you can click the link to the actual source (not some leftist rag) if you like.

"From: STUDIES WEEKLY RESPONSE TO THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE

We find the  omission or altering of historical fact to be abhorrent and do not defend it.

Although it was too late, once we discovered the unapproved changes, as evidenced by the file discrepancies within our submission we planned to rectify the situation but could not edit it during the review. Those unapproved changes have already been removed from our curriculum. We had no intention of allowing those versions to become our official state versions..."

https://www.studiesweekly.com/

So if you go read the whole thing it sounds like a couple of progressive leftists decided to infiltrate Studies Weekly and do a little sabotage. They got caught and apparently they got fired. So at least another one (maybe two) bite the dust. So some good came of it.

And Beave you should know by now my bullshit detector is deadly. Doesn't matter if I miss something I'll keep going until the whole truth gets out there.

I see why your compatriots were so desperate not to post links though.

I was going to do an image search on their photoshopped quotes to see where they originally came from but then I thought, 'no let's see how deep they want to dig their hole first.'

First you said that the textbook photos were “heavily photoshopped” and now you show us evidence that the publisher admits they were actual passages from their books.

Pretty clever what the publisher is doing: “Hey, we’re just complying with the law, and Florida will tell us what they’ll accept or not.”  Of course, if The NY Times hadn’t uncovered and published this, it’s likely the whitewashing of Rosa Parks and segregation would go unnoticed.

No they don't. Nor did I claim they did. I claimed that reading between the lines I sensed dirty deeds. Specifically infiltration of the editing process then using it to post a false story in a legitimate publication that the easily persuaded would repeat as evidence the curriculum was being corrupted by the Governor and state and not themselves.

I got the idea from this passage in the original source. Not the lies from partisan sources like NYT and the Hill that have been proven false but you still cultishly insist on nodding your head and obediently agreeing with:

"Typically our quality assurance processes would have flagged and denied edit approval. Unfortunately during the final hours before the deadline they circumvented the established protocols in an attempt to submit their revisions on time.

We have identified those individuals, taken corrective action and implemented additional safeguards to avoid any issues in the future.

And I find it interesting that you insist on supporting the second hand telling of the story by partisan sources to the testimonial from the original source on what is currently in the curriculum.

I get it though, you as king of lies must always support the lie or what's left in your kingdom.

Except the revisions to the curriculum as described in your NYT piece isn't true. It's a lie. The publisher says so. The curriculum was not revised to take Rosa Parks out nor to make her white. You're basing your thesis on proven lies.

First you said that the textbook photos were “heavily photoshopped” and now you show us evidence that the publisher admits they were actual passages from their books.

There is some heavy photo-shopping in at least one of the two pics the NYT used to produce that clip. Two separate photos were taken from different sources years in the past. They are the same picture but one has the skin lightened.

https://tineye.com/search/d8c14a77a38e946ebadfc31bd626f7b15686dc1e?sort=score&order=desc&page=1

https://tineye.com/search/796c091b6a448661aaada0905280b4d1ed05e253?sort=score&order=desc&page=1

The two pictures were then taken by the New York Times and produced for the public with hastily produced and in one case uneven text.

I never said either of those NYT productions were in the current curriculum. That's a lie based on the lie told originally by NYT. Why do you pathetic types keep on insisting on believing the lie even though the actual facts have been laid out before you?

Oh yes, is great, robo from California and his crew know this concept.

Some trust the FBI, law enforcement, courts, and the process, does that mean we don't understand it? ? You want me to participate in this fear-mongering as a sheep follower? Not a chance.

So in a way, you are like a guru, showing the "Truth".

MSNBC and AOC will do this to you. Just like Fox News with Trump. Different type of program, the same type of mob politics at the end, though.

It's ok, AOC and Trump are not as strong as the system. The HOUSE always wins, robo, as it is at the casino. No matter, if one speaks nicer than the other.

You're WRONG. Unlike your FALSE EQUIVALENCY at Fox, there is NO EVIDENCE that MSNBC hosts do NOT believe what they're selling.

You are SO INTENT on finding FALSE EQUIVALENCY, it's got you twisting like a pretzel with NO SALT.

The northern 1/3 of CA is very similar to what you would see in Idaho, montana, Wyoming, or Eastern oregon. I visit this area 8 to 10 times per year.

Yes it's lovely.  Reminded me of home when I was there.  Very homey, approachable, loveable people although they are suspicious of government, business, universities, and ... anything.  They react kind of like Frankenstein to a torch.

Loved it there.

I was travelling through with a GF named "Hillary"... and when she gave her name to people it was like she was named "Lucifer".... I'm pretty sure Hillary's in the western states go by their middle name :D

Kind of incredible how the Republican Party has so successfully installed the middle ages into their bedrock states.  Pretty soon they will be like the Russian peasants of the 1920s- distrustful of people who can read, or wanting to execute people with glasses like the Khmer Rouge....

I've been in that part maybe once - it was pretty nice.

I agree with folks who do not like being in the urban core of certain CA cities or the ultra-affluent suburbs (Davis, Carlsbad, Novato, etc) but there is plenty of CA that is quite scenic and not a "s**hole". However, most city folks think that any place that is not a major city is a "s**hole"

Really ?  Then why are they always leaving ?

Most people I know in the city are here because their people are here or for $. It *helps* if you like the culture but few people I know live here for that.  More people like "nightlife" which you can get a fair dose of in medium sized cities.

First, the population in the US is becoming more urban so not sure what you are talking about when you say they are always leaving.

Second, it is a general thing. Every time I talk to someone in Boise, Reno, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas etc.. when you mention a town of less than 20k... you get the usual roll of the eyes. Yes, xyzville with population of 1,400 is charming but it is a s**hole full of 40-pt IQ rednecks who barely are house broke. Or that is the general perception of my conversations with them.

1. They leave.  Everyone I know wants to leave.  The population is increasing due to foreigners.
2. They need to love rednecks.  The key is to not mention politics or your gay satanic cousin.... I am a redneck at heart...

Can you prove that first claim with raw data? No links, no opinions, no articles. Understood?

They do not need to love anyone. They willingly choose to live in a city and like the comfort/options of it. When I go to the more rural places with or without kids... I simply leave politics out. Why? Because I do not actually care all that much about politics. Therefore, it is not all that difficult.
