The Irrational World of European Football Radicals

Recommended Posts

This is dedicated to "old guard" members that activated in Europe and pulled their weight in irrationality. Some, at different levels than others. We were all young. 😄

As the Green Street Hooligans movie shows, the weight was pulled by mostly men, in every aspect of society.

Real life was not as extreme though. That was just a movie.

But it is true, inside the stadium, from market traders to common thugs, everyone shared the drug of European football, until some grew up, took different routes, and others, are still doing this, at an advanced age, with no purpose.

I mean, if you pass a certain age and one is still going to the stadium to light up flares, then you deserve your faith.

2 Videos that will act as a preview for this thread:

a) Americans reacting to European Football Scene

b) Shocking scene as Italian fans from AC Milan threw a scooter over rivals, Inter Milan:

Been there, done that, grew up.

I remember one away game, a very long time ago, when the police picked us up at the station, as it was standard procedure, at one point, one police officer says:

"We are taking a different route"

Why?

Because on the main route, people that live in the buildings are throwing boiled water from their balconies.

😄

It was part of growing up.

I rather keep that private. 😎 But I was a nut, I did not cross the line into violence per say, but still was a big nut, I remember one time I woke up on a bench surrounded by homeless dogs at an Eastern European away game, this was an away game. Missed the main bus with the group.

and ended up taking a minibus towards my departure, driven by a man that I remember to this day insisted that I DO NOT wear a seatbelt. As you know, in some parts of Eastern Europe, wearing a seatbelt can give you a look of suspicion. Over there, a real man does NOT wear a seatbelt. 😄 I used to think like that too, but then Canada civilized me.

⬆️ Trouble between Napoli (Italy) and Frankfurt (Germany)

Eintracht Frankfurt fans have clashed with police in Italy ahead of their club's Champions League last-16 match against Napoli.

Footage showed chairs being hurled at riot police, who had been responding with tear gas.

Naples authorities had banned residents of the German city from buying tickets for the match, after violence during the first leg in Frankfurt.

This was a video from a time ago. From the Netherlands. NAC Breda fans.

The goalkeeper was playing an away game, normally, the crowd is hostile, however, the Goalkeeper's mother died and the home fans decided to leave the hatred aside and sing:
"You Will Never Walk Alone!"

The quarterfinals for the Champions League will be played April 11-12.

  • Benfica (Portugal) vs. Inter Milan (Italy).
  • AC Milan (Italy) vs. Napoli (Italy).
  • Real Madrid (Spain) vs. Chelsea (England).
  • Manchester City (England) vs. Bayern Munich (Germany).

I will try until then to do a presentation of each team's fans.

First up, Benfica Lisbon from Portugal:

Fulham get three sent off in a minute.  The manager is first to go, then Willian for handling on the line, (out of picture as the ref awards the penalty and gives him the red), and then Mitrovic pushes the ref.  M0ron.  He'll probably be out ten games for that.

Enormous fun.

AC Milan will be playing their fellow Italian team, Napoli.

Now, the Napoli supporters don't really care about the Italian anthem or name, there have been cases where they turned around when the national anthem was playing. Napolitano first for them!

You can also go up a few posts, recently, Napoli ultras clashed with away fans.

Below is their presentation:

The next team up is Real Madrid from Spain. I am sure everyone is aware of this team, even though you don't follow the game.

Below is a video of their fanatics: 😎

The next team up which will face Real Madrid is Chelsea from London, England.

MacIntyre Undercover - Chelsea
Headhunters

In 1999, the BBC aired a documentary about the Chelsea Headhunters, a gang of football hooligans. Irish investigative reporter Donal MacIntyre went undercover and infiltrated the gang, wearing a concealed camera and pretending to be a Chelsea hooligan — even to the point of getting a Chelsea tattoo to convince the hooligans that he was a lifetime supporter.

Altercations and arrests at friendly game. Turkish vs Russian Fans.

There was tension during the friendly match between Fenerbahce and Zenit St Petersburg.

About 30 Zenit fans made their way to Istanbul for the game and entered the home supporters' section. This didn't sit well with the Fenerbahce fans, and minor altercations broke out with both sets of fans becoming aggressive and throwing objects.

The police intervened and separated the fans, moving the Russians to the away section. However, even during this process, the tension remained high, and a minor incident between the Turkish police and Zenit fans resulted in the arrest of three Russians.

The ref should stand his ground when players mob him like that and send off anyone who advances into him. Better yet, fall over and writhe in pain. In rugby the captain handles discussions about decisions with the ref. Nobody else should be talking to the guy. Red cards for unnecessary interactions would change behaviour quickly.

Yes, I've long thought that there should be a rule that only captains can interact with the referee.  Any one else even talks to them and it's a card.
