DeSantis’s ‘Apocalyptic’ Attack on Higher Education

Quote

Under Florida House Bill 999, general education core courses couldn’t present a view of American history “contrary to the creation of a new nation based on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence,” creating obvious limits on the teaching of subjects like slavery and the Native American genocide. The bill also says that general education courses shouldn’t be based on “unproven, theoretical or exploratory content,” without defining what that means. “State officials would have unfettered discretion to determine which views are ‘theoretical’ and banned from general education courses,” says a statement by the libertarian-leaning Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

Finally, the bill centralizes political control over hiring by allowing faculty to be cut out of the process. Right now, some boards of trustees have the power to veto hiring recommendations made by faculty and administrators, though Young says they rarely use it. Under House Bill 999, rather than an up-or-down vote on candidates vetted by university bodies, trustees could just hire whomever they want. “They don’t even have to hire someone who applied through the regular process,” said Young. “They can just say, ‘Here’s my friend Joe, he’s going to be the new history professor.’”

This would give DeSantis’s cronies enormous power over who can teach in Florida’s colleges and universities. Last month, I wrote about the governor’s campaign to transform the New College of Florida, a progressive public institution, into a bastion of conservatism. At the time, some faculty members suspected that DeSantis’s new trustees might find their grandiose plans stymied by bureaucratic obstacles. Young believes that House Bill 999 would sweep many of those obstacles away.

The bill, of course, is only one part of DeSantis’s culture war. His administration has already limited what can be taught to K-12 students about race, sex and gender. (Some teachers removed all books from their classroom shelves while they waited for them to be reviewed for forbidden content.) When Disney spoke out against one of DeSantis’s education measures, the governor punished the corporation. And he is pushing legislation taking aim at the news media by making it easier for people — especially those accused of racial or gender discrimination — to sue for defamation.

Wow you are as stupid as the brain-dead educrats who demand absolute control over education. Don’t you realize the bloated useless woke government bureaucrats are already micro-managing education?

Let’s stop government micro-managing education and offer school choice.

There’s no choice when the government makes it a crime for teachers to tell the truth to their students.

WRONG. You goose steppers will take a "school choice" case all the way to the Supreme Court, just so little black students can be trapped at the inner city shithole public school.

DeSantis says no to BLACK QUEER STUDIES, as well as racist, Nazi courses like Critical Race Theory.

Pretty much EVERY President of the United States managed to be educated at colleges WITHOUT BLACK QUEER STUDIES.

You people are LIARS. This is why your blue state schools are failing and Florida's schools are top in the county. Look at the fckin !DIOTS your blue state colleges are vomiting all over the place.

Teachers from Florida have been taking jobs up in NY for years. Much better pay and benefits and less fascist overreach

That is a LIE. Teachers from New York are moving down here in droves. Their pittance of "More pay" is eaten up by high taxes, a higher cost of living and HIGH GASOLINE TAXES.

New York IS A FASCIST STATE, as is ANY blue state.

It's worth noting that if you click the link in the OP to the 'fishwrap of record's' paygated story on this the title they give you is "Florida Could Start Looking a Lot Like Hungary."

And it's strongly labelled as "Opinion."

IF you googled the TITLE, you'd find many OTHER SOURCES.

Unfortunate you never learned how to google.... LMAO

Never learned to care about an opinion piece from the New York Times (a former newspaper.)

Maybe if you followed the logic and reasons given, you could learn to care.

Of course that would require an open mind. AKA departure from caring ONLY about the OPINIONS seen on FOX LIES.

NY teachers make 120k plus a year. And more if they do summer school. Their benis and retirement package and lifetime healthcare is something teachers in Florida can only dream of. Your average NY teacher retires a wealthy person owning a home that's worth 4 times or more than what a Florida teacher will ever have. Most NY teachers own second homes in Florida or other southern states. How many Fla teachers own second homes in NY? But nice try

And your teachers get most of that money TAXED away or sucked out in higher costs of living.

By all means, tell your inadequate teachers to STAY THERE. We don't want them in Florida. Our standards are too high.

A teacher who purchases a home in NY or especially in the borroughs or Long Island at the early part of their career will be far ahead financially of any red state teacher at retirement, despite the higher living costs. Teachers in NY live in some of the finest houses and best neighborhoods.

But math has always seemed to be a problem with the right so I'm not surprised by your half baked notions.

Which teachers make 120k a year? According to Indeed, the average salary is $72k.

Those houses cost a fortune and the property taxes are ridiculously high (just to serve that HUGE New York welfare state.)

It's not how much money you have. It's what that money will buy. And people living in left wing shitholes like New York or California either are super rich or they live like paupers.

We're getting teachers in New York wanting to move down to Florida in droves, and it's not because they like the scent of mosquito repellent.

It’s the same as if Germany passed a law making it illegal to teach Germans that World War II or the Holocaust happened.

That is a LIE.

American public schools have been teaching black history since there was such a thing as American public schools. I learned PLENTY about the Civil War and slavery in the public schools I attended in North Carolina. And I'm better educated than ANY goose stepping DemoNazi here.

And those North Carolina schools (and this goes back to the SIXTIES and part of the SEVENTIES) didn't feel it necessary to shove BLACK QUEER STUDIES in our faces.

You're a liar and a stupid one at that.

There's not a single tenured teacher making less than a 100k in NY. Oh after 20 yrs they retire at 70% salary with healthcare for life. Yep that's what getting paid is like in a union strong Yankee state

Simple math lesson. Try to stay focused. NY Teachy pays property tax of 10k a yr on a house. Makes 120k yrly. Fla Teachy pays 1.5k property tax makes 70k. And the Fla numbers are generous. Is that equation understandable so far?

This doesn't even bring into account the NY Teachys home will be worth a mil plus in any of the Burroughs and 650k in upstate Eeeeasy.

Teachy in Fla pays off home after a lifetime and it's worth what. OK I'll be real generous here. 350k.

Math doesn't lie. The Repulican right wing noise machine which your mesmerized by does.
