Trump - DeSantis rivalry breaks into the open

When all’s well — This is sort of an October surprise even though it's unlikely to change the apparent trajectory of this year’s election.

Driving — Former President Donald Trump — now a Florida man — jolted the political world of his adopted home state by announcing Wednesday that he will do a campaign rally in Miami just two days before Election Day.

Missing Trump made it clear in his announcement that he’s doing the rally to show his support for Sen. Marco Rubio, who Trump has already endorsed. So who wasn’t mentioned in the announcement? Gov. Ron DeSantis. An adviser to the former president told POLITICO that DeSantis was not attending.

Each and every one Let’s recall that Trump — whose endorsement of DeSantis in 2018, ahead of that year’s Republican primary, was a key reason he won — has not endorsed the governor for reelection because DeSantis hasn’t asked for one. More importantly, DeSantis keeps signaling a run for president in 2024 (see Monday night’s debate with Charlie Crist) even though Trump himself continues to strongly suggest he will run again.

Rollercoaster — The decision by Trump to hold the rally just ahead of the election — and five days after President Joe Biden holds a get-out-the-vote rally in Miami Gardens — took DeSantis world by surprise. One person who is influential in DeSantis circles told POLITICO that it was “an elbow to Ron’s throat” and blamed Trump's advisers. A Trump adviser, however, contended it was just one of a series of stops the former president was making for GOP Senate candidates.

Frost and fire — The timing of Trump’s announcement also comes a few days after Trump and DeSantis had a bit of a dust-up over… the Colorado Senate race. DeSantis decided to endorse and record a robocall for Joe O’Dea, who is trying to knock off Sen. Michael Bennet. DeSantis decided to do this even though Trump had already trashed O’Dea for saying he would “actively” campaign against the former president if he ran again. Trump called DeSantis’ endorsement a “big mistake.”

I don’t want to talk about it — There has always been speculation that a Trump-DeSantis confrontation was inevitable, while others have tried to brush off any hint of conflict as some sort of media invention. This week, however, may have marked the moment when what was happening behind the scenes burst into plain view.

— WHERE'S RON? — Nothing official announced for Gov. DeSantis.

Meh.

DeSantis is ten points up on Crist in Florida. The Beatles were the last people to be that popular, if Lennon is to be believed.

That's pretty weak imo. I don't put any stock in the "anonymous sources" of leftist rags.

Seems like someone's trying to stir the pot.

Is it weird that DeSantis, as nothing more than a Fla gov., is trying to lend his endorsement to a Colorado senate race?

From DeSantis POV, I can understand how an extra GOP vote might be worth getting, if O'Dea was even going to go along with the GOP.

From Trump's POV, and a GOP view in general, the party is better off having a Dem in the Senate than a GOP who votes for the Dems anyways, and who also does campaign speeches on behalf of the Dems.

I'm siding with Trump on this one. It's weird going into a knife fight if you don't know which side some of "your guys" are actually on. Better to get rid of them beforehand than to have them at your back.

Here in Florida, there's NO WAY we want our beloved Governor to run for President until he has finished a second term here. By then, he'll have so much national momentum, (and the support of President Trump) that a landslide victory in 2028 will be a lock.

Right now, DeSantis is the greatest and most popular governor in the history of this state. We don't want to lose him any time soon.

I watched DeSantis rhetoric. Trump has low chances. Today he called the 'US' evil because of his personal issues with the prosecution that he is facing, that will get you some points. This is the same man that asked Russia to hack Clinton live on TV. Can you imagine that? you invite the KGB to hack for you? Negativity after negativity on a daily basis with him.

DeSantis is younger, well-spoken, the crowds are quite large at his events too, of course he is a committed man of the right but the presidency might change after Biden if the economy hits the people hard and maybe that country needs a return to the establishment to calm the Trump movement as which many of you are fans of = )

If the economy gets affected, is DeSantis (Republican) in 2024 in my opinion.

Pretending there are two camps on the right won't save the situation for the Democrats. Folks that like Trump also like DeSantis. And there's yer problem...

Of course they do, the issue will happen if the Republicans with McConell's influence (he does not get along with Trump last time I read) decide to pick DeSantis, will Trump instruct his followers to go vote for DeSantis?

Because I understand maybe 75 % will go because they like them both and don't like the democrats, but he also needs that other big chunk.

Unless they go with Trump-DeSantis ticket, but I doubt it. DeSantis does not look like Mike Pence to just sit and say nothing and Trump does not like challenge to authority.

The ONLY rivalry that exists is in the fevered minds of the Democrats.

Oh wait, there is also Tulsi Gabbard. I forgot about that, she is growing influence amongst the right too.

Will she play a role?

DeSantis - Tulsi Gabbard or maybe Trump - Tulsi Gabbard I can see that happening, Trump seems to send her positive messages once in a while.

Very curious what the teams will be.

While a lot of people like Tulsi, she's not a Republican. But the Democrats sure want her to be.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted support for fellow rumored 2024 GOP contender Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) after former President Trump nicknamed him at a Saturday rally.

Trump uttered the nickname during a rally he held in Latrobe, Pa., in support of Pennsylvania Republican Senate nominee Mehmet Oz and gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano, both of whom are facing competitive races and were endorsed by Trump in their primaries.

The former president showed rallygoers a recent survey of the 2024 GOP presidential contest that indicated Trump had 71 percent support, far ahead of DeSantis, former Vice President Pence and other Republicans.

“We’re winning big, big, big in the Republican Party for the nomination like nobody’s ever seen before,” Trump said.

“Let’s see, there it is: Trump at 71. Ron DeSanctimonious at 10 percent. Mike Pence at 7 — oh, Mike’s doing better than I thought.”

There’s no possible way that Trump has more dirt in diSantis than the world already knows about Trump.

The Trump-DeSantis feud is now open and bitter

US election: Trump tears into rising Republican rival DeSantis

In a lengthy statement on Thursday night, Mr Trump dismissed the Florida governor as a political lightweight who had come to him "in desperate shape" when running for his first term in office in 2017.

"Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse [sic] him, he could win," Mr Trump said. "I also fixed his campaign, which had completely fallen apart."

He went on to complain that Mr DeSantis - whom he is nicknaming "Ron DeSanctimonious" - was "playing games" by refusing to rule out a presidential bid.

"Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that's really not the right answer," Mr Trump added.

Trump Spreads Rumors, Threatens Allies in All-Out Attack on DeSantis

Trump on Thursday evening posted a screed about “Ron DeSanctimonious” — his new moniker for his potential 2024 rival. In a string of Truth Social posts, the former president takes credit for the Florida governor’s political success and accuses him of disloyalty. “Ron came to me in desperate shape in 2017 — he was politically dead, losing in a landslide to a very good Agriculture Commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was loaded up with cash and great poll numbers,” Trump wrote.

Trump also lashed out at the governor for refusing to promise not to challenge him in the 2024 primary, saying it was lacking “loyalty and class.” And he suggested DeSantis’ political acumen was overrated, writing the Florida official was an “average REPUBLICAN Governor with great Public Relations.”

A timeline of Donald Trump's punches, jabs and attacks on Ron DeSantis in past week

Saturday, November 5: Trump calls DeSantis “Ron DeSanctimonious” at a rally in Latrobe, Pa., for U.S. Senate candidate Mehmet Oz. DeSantis does not respond.

Sunday, November 6: Trump tells supporters at a rally in Miami for U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio that Gov. Ron DeSantis will win re-election. The rally includes prominent Florida Republicans, including Sen. Rick Scott and U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz. Trump’s Save America PAC did not include DeSantis on the list of invited guests. DeSantis does not mention Trump at his three campaign rallies in Sun City Center, Sarasota and Fort Myers.

Tuesday, November 8: Trump, in a wide-ranging interview with several media outlets, including Fox News Digital, says DeSantis should stay out of the running for president in 2024. Trump warns DeSantis would “hurt himself badly” with the Republican party if he chose to do so and that he would reveal “things about [DeSantis] that won’t be very flattering.” DeSantis does not respond. That same day, Trump calls DeSantis “a fine guy” and told reporters outside a polling station in West Palm Beach that he voted for DeSantis.

Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump)

Wednesday, November 9: On Truth Social, Trump boasts about how he got more votes in Florida in 2020 than DeSantis got on Tuesday. “Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking? No comment from DeSantis.

Thursday, November 10:Trump fires off a fiery broadside at DeSantis on Truth Social, calling him "an average REPUBLICAN Governor with great Public Relations." Trump writes that he catapulted DeSantis in the 2018 governor's race with his endorsement, saying DeSantis approached him in "desperate shape in 2017" when DeSantis, then a congressman, "was politically dead, losing in a landslide" to a GOP front-runner. No response from DeSantis.

It’s being reported that on Truth Social, Trump copied a truth post from somebody else(“retruthing”) onto his own page.It says that Trump and DeSantis were faking a disagreement in order to observe the reaction of certain Republicans.  So Trump is indicating that this is true.

I don't know if all those alleged quotes are accurate or if they even came from Trump.

It's possible that driving a wedge" and creating a war between Trump and deSantis could hurt BOTH of them.   Wouldn't that be the wet dream of Dems, or progressive Republicans like Cheney?

It seems that the Republicans will soon be in a major fight between DeSantis and Trump factions.

Murdoch media seems to be moving away from Trump, especially the NY Post.

Yes, I agree, there is also a third group, the group which says "Hold the line" and they should run together.

They are incompatible to run together. I think if Trump does not render support to DeSantis, the vote being fragmented, the Republicans are in serious trouble to losing the presidency.

Trump won't do it in my opinion, too much ego and he already started with the "classic" attacks:

Several hours before polls opened on Tuesday for Election Day in Florida, former President Donald J. Trump warned the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, against mounting a challenge to Mr. Trump’s own anticipated presidential candidacy in the 2024 election cycle.

“If he runs, he runs,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. DeSantis to a handful of reporters traveling with him on his private plane — recently refurbished and put back into use — after a rally Monday night in Dayton, Ohio.

But Mr. Trump added, in remarks published on Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal, “If he did run, I will tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.”

Trump has said that he has something on De Santis and he's going to publish it if De Santis challenges him.'

I call it bluff. If that was true he would say so privately to De Santis. Instead he sows the seeds of suspicion among the public hoping they would think hmhh I wonder what skeletons there are in De Santis's closet.

All in all, Trump seems to be jealous of his younger candidate and his popularity.

Mulroney ultimately won, for the good us all:

1. He created the GST. (You Americans need a federal sales tax, Mulroney did it.)

2. He sorta made it easier for Americans and Canadians to deal with each other.

3. Mulroney failed on making the Canadian federation viable. Long term. (Meech Lake_

Trudeau Snr wanted to make Canada another Austrian-Hungarian society.

4. Mulroney failed on transfers/UIC.

Good bye Charlie Brown!
